I used to work with convicts and was jealous when we bussed them back to the prison at 3:30 PM and I worked 1 – 2 more hours. They had food, shelter, clothing, sunshine, and were paid $0.12/hour in 1969. I got over my jealousy when I finally headed home: to my wife and a home-cooked meal. For perspective, I made like $3.45/hr as a civil service worker.
My mother’s coworker and his wife bought a new house. To save money, they agreed to put in their own lawn. He hade a deal with a farmer to cut sod from his sheep pasture and hired me to roll and cut it. After that, we loaded it on a truck, took it to his new house, and laid the sod where the lawn would be. Then he turned on a sprinkler to wet it down.
When the sod got wet, the smell of sheep excrement was released and became overwhelming. About that time, I took my pay and wnet home.

Sheep are actually pretty clever. They’re one of the very few farm animals that can’t be kept in industrial mass production facilities.
