She could have accidentally dropped his dinner on the floor and scraped up what was left after she shooed away the dog. (The dog usually gets only a occasional scrap that falls from his plate.)
One year when my sister pulled the Christmas goose out of the oven, it fell off the pan and slid several feet across the kitchen floor. A quick dusting off, and no one knew the difference.
There is one hint as to where that dinner was before he arrived. There is the alternate suggestion that the food is ok but that he eat on the stoep to protect the floors. If I were he, I’d head for the diner.
We had spent the day cleaning the house. My aunt, visiting had fixed dinner. Pork chops. She flipped the pan upside down on the floor. We picked them up, ate them anyway. We have forever called pork chops “Upside down pork chops” since!
This is where I recommend he check into a nice Hotel and have a nice dinner at their finest restaurant since the wife has some anger issues to work out
My daughter always kicks off her shoes when she comes to the house. (A barefoot kind of person) I told her once not to take her shoes off because I’d just cleaned the floor. And suddenly I’m the bad guy. Go figure.
When I was little we weren’t allowed in the kitchen after mom washed the floor or for even longer when she waxed it. The only way to the bathroom was through the kitchen so that made for some discrete outdoor excursions.

It might be a little gritty, but at least I managed to save before the dog got to it. You can thank me later.
