Ah, the mosh pit brings back memories of the late 80’s and ’90s with concerts on the FSU and UA campuses by groups like The Replacements, Husker Du, Nirvana (before they went big with Nevermind) and any of the college rock bands out of Athens GA (Dreams So Real, Pylon and even REM until they went mainstream). Goodtimes but watch out for the slam dancers and speaker divers!
This had to be the night I decided to listen to the overnight jazz program on WFIU. Actually, looking at the last panel, I now have The Fall’s “Cruisers’ Creek” in my head. Loud.
I had heard of a mosh pit but didn’t know what it was. Wikipedia: “Moshing is an extreme style of dancing in which participants push or slam into each other.” Now I understand what’s happening on the bed. Goldie and Lupin are planning on running into each other. (Both have back paw toebeans showing, BTW.)
It’s times like this when the cats need their own bedroom. I know they don’t feel that way, but the wee a.m. moshing with 19 enthusiastic paws … ugh … I don’t know how the Woman can take it. She must have a bladder made of both rubber and iron.
Rare Sighting Of Dancing Rear Toe Beans (Goldie and Lupin), RSODRTB for future reference. Also, I love Elvis’s Siamese scowl. He is having none of these improper shenanigans.
Hamilton A. Cat always sleeps on the author’s left side, usually with my arm around him. Holly Bear Cat is curled up by the author’s left foot. Never on the right foot; this is very important. Belle Cat and Mittens are draped over Marie or by her head. Iko P-Pup is lying over Marie’s legs, snoring.
And then there’s the (not so) smart bomb, Holmes.
Sometime around two a.m., the orange (not so) smart bomb lands on my abdomen, probably bruising my liver, having been launched from the floor at the end of a warp-speed sprint. The orange bomb then proceeds to bounce off Hamilton, Holly, and every other creature in the area. Cats & dog erupt into motion and mass confusion. Then, the orange (not so) smart bomb jumps off the bed and races away at approximately warp 2.5 for parts unknown, with a dog and cats laying in a pursuit course and arming phasers and photon torpedoes.
Not wanting to waste being abruptly awakened, the author uses this time to go to the bathroom.
The next day, the author is questioned at work as to why he always looks so tired.
Fortunately our house has a master bedroom “wing” so we have recently started leaving the two worst offenders in the family room at night while the other 3 plus dog get to stay with us. I felt guilty for about 1 night.
My cats have decided that I am a hurdle to be vaulted over in the wee small hours. They launch from the top of my dresser /wardrobe, bounce off the bed and over me, land on the bed and from there to the floor. (Sigh, time for another trip to the bathroom and get out of my way, you cursed furball!!)
…and this… this is why the 2 tiny terrorists sleep in the bathroom…. they turn 2 in June…. partner keeps asking when they can stay out all night like the big cats and the dogs… I reply with, “when you’re ready to chase them down and corral them at 0200 while they’re swinging from the yardarm….” So far they remain locked in at night….
Even as babies my girls have always had a good respect for bedtime. Gracie will wake me up if I sleep too late, but she’s very forgiving on that. They learned at an early age that the bed is not a playground. Gracie did used to attack my hands if i didn’t keep them under the covers, thus her nickname cuddle monster, but she got over that by the time she had her first Gotcha Day. Sara’s only faux pas is her short attention span. She hops up for a little cuddle and is gone in 60 seconds. LOL Any 2am romping is done far from the bedroom. But usually they’re asleep at that hour.
When the Woman gets back to her bed, the cats will have fallen asleep in strategically spaced heaps, leaving her to cling to the edge of the mattress for the rest of the night.
Last night Albert’s Man got tired of Bartholomew taking up so much room on the bed and began to slowly push him toward the foot of the bed, thinking “Boy, is he heavy!”. Then he saw that Bartholomew and Jonathan were spooned together and Bart had draped one front leg over Jackie’s middle.
Our current car is preternaturally gentle. (Always wanted to use that word ever since The Scarlet Letter in HS.) She pats the humans’ cheeks softly to wake them up.

Irene Cara: Flashdance
First, there is silence
And it seems like a dream
Then a tortoiseshell cat
Wakes me up!
…….
Not alone, so many cats
Gather on top of the bed
It’s a world of made of music
And dancing too!
…….
Well, I hear the music
As the Girl joins the fray
Now I carry her back to her bed!
…….
Oh! What a feeling!
Time for kitties to get up and mosh!
Take your passion!
And make it happen!
All get on the bed and dance for all nine lives!
Make it happen
(What a feeling)
What a feeling!

Meanwhile, Back on the Nile
At the Literary Festival
Beatrixia: …And so, Paddle made his journey down the Nile and found his way to the New World, where his story would inspire an indigenous boy.
Puckmosis: Thank you Bea, for that lovely story. Now we will take a short break. Feel free to climb on the tapestry, and we will back soon.
Puck: That was great, Bea! Who do we have up next?
Bea: Iggy is going to read Treasured Island.
