As usual, Mrs. Olsen has nailed it. Quizzes are the basic training aids for the big time. Get the fundamentals down and the final will be a doddle [as the Australians say . . . or once did.]

This is literally what my comment was yesterday. Kids in school don’t get to make mistakes without consequences.

It’s true for everybody, so it’s a level field. On that score, anyway, but not others.

Testing should work in both directions. If the teacher discovers from the test results that most of the kids couldn’t accurately answer a question about, say, the order of the colors in the visible spectrum, it’s a sign that it hadn’t been adequately taught and should probably warrant a revision to the lesson plans to take another run at it.
