When this strip was last reprinted in the summer of 2019 – which was the 25th anniversary of the release of the original version of The Lion King and also the summer in which the remake was released – a reader commented, “Hobbes is a natural for The Lion King”. I replied, “As a tiger, he is more suited to The Jungle Book. He could also have played Rajah in Aladdin.” Someone replied to me, “If Hobbes had played Rajah in Aladdin, it would have been a very different movie!”
I wrote an article on Linked-In. This strip reminded me of it. The article is a commentary on the value of diversity on a team. It is titled, “Differently Smart.”
My stepnice was working on her PhD in anthropology. She lived with the pygmies for a while.
One of the things that struck her was their honesty: brutal honesty. They told her that they felt sorry for her because she was too ugly to get a man to marry her.
She’s white. She’s tall (even by Western standards.) She’s too skinny (Not that she thought so, but apparently pygmy men like women with “meat on their bones.”)
They also thought that Americans and Europeans were stupid. You can’t leave them out in the jungle alone for a minute without them getting into some kind of trouble.
Pygmies do well in the jungle where we are likely to fail; they are differently smart.
I will probably never hire a pygmy. However, if I am ever in the jungle, I want one on my team.
Hmmm, if Calvin lived in an area where he didn’t have to worry about tigers ambushing him from a tree, then just why did he set a trap with a tuna sandwich expecting (successfully, I might add) to capture a tiger? Even in Calvin’s world, you just can’t have it both ways.
He’s got a point. I’ve always found it annoying when someone tells me I wouldn’t be able to “get away with” whatever I’m doing if I lived somewhere else/had a different job/etc. Obviously I would behave differently under different circumstances.

I guess Calvin still needs more practice on being a wild animal.

Now, how will he explain his cuts and bruises to his parents? A chance encounter with Moe off school grounds? Or did Susie beat him up?

There are some neighborhoods where the tigers are armed and dangerous. AND out of their minds. Jungle might be better…

Situational Awareness is one thing. Scanning the treetops in Suburbia for tigers is a whole new level.
