Does this every year as a new batch is born. Tends to thin the herd so to speak. I tried to get one of those poles they use to push the breaker back in but no luck.
This happened this last spring. 1030am on the weekend. I first realized the wifi was out. Put on the battery radio, then put my phone on data to find out the extent of tthe outage. Almost the whole town. I did other things until it resumed around 2
Many years ago, sitting watching TV and the power went out. About 3 seconds later I heard a loud “Boom!” Went out on the back porch and saw a single large black cloud of smoke wafting across the sky. Squirrel caused a massive short, blacking out about a square mile. TV news showed what was left of the poor thing, which wasn’t very much.
One time when waiting for the bus for kindergarten, I saw a transformer blow up a few blocks away. And then the next closest transformer blew up. Sensing a pattern, I stepped back a few steps and had the power lines fall right in front of me. Perhaps time to walk back home and ask what to do. They said later a crow was scratching an itch along the ruffled insulator that leads into a transformer on a pole.
Years later with the TV and the air conditioner on, the family saw the screen dim for a second, and the air conditioner slow down for a second, and then heard a fuzzy pop coming from a few blocks away. Then we saw smoke coming from that direction, the site of the neighborhood’s substation. It was an animal that shorted itself out, but without much infrastructure damage this time.
Eighteen months ago, I bought and set up a Battery Backup-Surge Suppressor for my cable modem and network router. This spring we had an outage I thought the same thing as Arlo. Then I remembered I’d bought the UPS! Sure enough, the wireless logo was still showing and these delightful pages were still being fed!
I used to be an EMT. Got called to support a fire. A squirrel had jumped on a transformer by a house. The squirrel caught on fire and caused the tree to catch on fire. It was out before we even arrived. The squirrel was still on the power line and smoking.
Sorry if this is obvious, but no one has clearly stated it… I think this is a comment on today’s priorities. ALL the electrical power has gone out, but Arlo only notices the lack of WiFi.
Sparrow got ours, took them 2 hours to restore the neighborhood, my instant UPS kicked and then the Generac. The machine was a blessing when wife got ill and relied on a lot of powered support machinery
This is one of those coindence things. Our power went out Sunday night, around 10:30 pm it kept going in and out for a couple of minutes and kept shutting my computer off, my A/C off and lights then come back on then after about 10 minutes of this the power went completely out. I have a flashlight I keep on my desk so I turned that on, and Dad gave me a big camp lantern that uses batteries when I moved in here so I turned that on. I checked outside to see if any other buildings around had power and we were only ones and one of the tenants was standing in middle of parking lot looking at sky and I asked him if they had power and he said the whole building was out and that he saw a flash in the sky like a transformer going out right before power went out completely. I turned my cell on, I have a landline but it is cordless and I do have a corded one for times like this but it is buried in a box that hasn’t been unpacked since I moved in here 4 years ago. I called the power company and she said I was first to call it in and said that they would send someone out immediately but it could take until 2 am to get back on. It was still hot and humid out so I couldn’t keep the door open so I got very warm and my asthma started bothering me so I had to use my emergency inhaler and after about 15 minutes I remember that one of the things in the stuff the nursing home gave back to us that was my sisters personal belongings when she died was a little table top battery powered fan so I found it and wouldn’t you know the batteries were dead and I didn’t have that size so I had to call and wake up my Dad because I knew he had some of that size because it is the same size the camp lanterns take. So I was able to put fan right in front of me, the power came back on about 1 1/2 hours later. My internet and WIFI were down because of no power but for some reason the app that I have on my tablet for studying Bible and publications for my religion was still coming up so I was able (cont)
to be on there so I didn’t get bored. I did have something I could read also. I truly hate when the power goes out at night because it effects my panic attacks and anxiety but it is also horrible when it happens a week into the heat dome we have been in here on the east coast.

Poor little squirrel. I wouldn’t want one as a pet, but I also don’t want to think of them being electrocuted.

We don’t worry about squirrels knocking out the power. Around here they’re too busy sacrificing themselves on the roads.

And this is why you put your modem and router on a ups. Last time my power went out, I could still use the WiFi for several hours.

Read an article a couple of years ago, it stated that squirrels were the number one cause of local power outages.
