Looking at those dog prints next to the doorbell Elizabeth should be able to know that not only did Edgar ring the doorbell himself, but Edgar’s toepads number anywhere from 3-5 toepads per paw and they can move around and point in different directions. Edgar’s paws are amazing and truly remarkable. He is a special dog.
Good, Edgar can ring the doorbell to be let in and only annoy the Pattersons, instead of barking and annoying the entire neighborhood like they were trying to train him to do.
Does Edgar know how to bark? Serious question. When I was a kid we got a dog from the SPCA. As she grew, she looked somewhat akin to the business side of a mop. However, she never barked. We’d ring the door bell and knock on the door and she’d happily wag her tail and run to the door, but didn’t bark. My folks finally took her to my aunt’s house who had a dog that would bark like mad when someone was at the door. By the end of the week, our little mutt caught on to the idea of barking when someone was at the door.
I had a cat that knew that the doorknob was how you opened the door. He would jump up at the doorknob with both paws. If the door was unlocked, he could sometimes open the door. It was rare that he succeeded, but he did manage to do it a few times. I’ve heard of dogs doing this, but never a cat.
I guess they’re taking this period of the strip to establish Edgar as the new dog character. Not super fascinating, but keeps dog people happy I suppose, what happened at the Garage, did he end up on Antiques Road Show? More Gordo !
Well, I would think the Pattersons would have noticed by now that the only time the mysterious doorbell rings happen is when Edgar wants to come in. Maybe that would have happened in another one or two cycles hadn’t his muddy paws tipped Elizabeth off.

It becomes more clear today that Edgar has learned what the doorbell is for, to letting him in the door.

It’s time to put a doorbell on the inside, so Edgar can ring it to get out.

Oh, no, don’t tell me Elly’s going to be mad about the paw prints even though she got exactly what she wanted.
