… & then come those overprotective types who make children wear helmets and kneepads when on the see saws, slides and swings. Dam n!, I am a hemophiliac but never did I wear so much protection while playing outside on those things.
We played on the old fashioned playground equipment all the time. If we fell off and got hurt, our mothers said “Any blood, any broken bones? If not, get back outside”
Distraction began decades back when tv became the afternoon babysitter. That had its negative effects on child growth. Then came the fascination with pc’s that offered the world in a 6×9 screen.
Now it’s that portable entertainment center, which is available while walking into traffic, falling into fountains, not noticing the sunrises and sunsets, and ignoring good dinner table behavior.
I grew up in an era when every school was 10 miles away uphill in each direction and it was always snowing.
We did play on dangerous equipment, yet somehow manage to escape major injury. Mostly, we hit the street running in the morning and didn’t stop until the street lights came on at night. We probably went through more pairs of sneakers than a marathon runner.
Our school recess had jump ropes, some bouncy balls, and we could play hop scotch.During summer we played outside all day in all kinds of weather. We climbed trees, ate green apples till we were sick and then go do it some more.Sure we’d get scraped knees and elbows, but you went home, picked out the gravel, applied some Bactine or mecuricrome, bandage up and be back outside in 15 minutes to play some more.
When 80/20 hamburger meat is $5 a pound, minimum wage hasn’t been adjusted for inflation in over 20 years, unaffordable housing prices and enormous student debt, who can afford to have children in this age?
Sometime in the late 1940’s I was riding my bicycle with my legs in the handle bars playing belly gunner. I must have hit a rock and dumbed myself onto the asphalt knocking me out. I woke up having been rescue by some construction workers. They saw I was ok and I was ok. I continued on my way being a bicycle rider and not a belly gunner. I don’t remember if I told my folks about it or not.

It started before the internet, with kids roaming the neighborhood resulting in Child Protective Services being sent to their homes by busybodies.

Major spelling mistake in both frames of this antoon. Everyant knows that the antwork in question is called the “Anternet.”

Indoors, slowly being programmed by their consoles and smart phones.

GoComics should consider adding a “don’t like” button.
