Can we dispense with the bless you nonsense when people sneeze? Utterly inane custom, and why I should thank you for uttering a meaningless phrase (historically based on superstitious nonsense) merely because I had a very acute allergic reaction (which is all a sneeze is) is beyond me.
My Sunday morning mental game… trying to figure out what the multi word pun will be before I get to the last panel. What an impressive amount of work must go into crafting these.
“God Bless America” is an American patriotic song written by Irving Berlin during World War I in 1918 and revised by him in the run-up to World War II in 1938. The later version was notably recorded by Kate Smith, becoming her signature song.
Before I started reading Pastis, I thought puns were funny. But I was familiar with them as spontaneous spoken one-liners. Usually as a completely unexpected comment or question responding to something someone else had said. No set-uo, prompt, no delay. A true art.
