It’s more about murdering sea turtles than the planet as a whole. Straws are just not a good shape to float around the ocean.

That said, I dislike the idea of a washable straw. I’ve never seen one that I felt was properly clean after the first use. And as they keep pointing out here, recyclable options are mostly lacking the ability to function as a straw, which kind of defeats the purpose.

I used paper straws for decades and never had a problem with them. Of course I wasn’t trying to drink Starbucks “coffee” through one.

Maybe the recyclable kind are bio degradable and they fall apart too soon. I believe they make washable, reusable ones now made from stainless steel or silicone.

ok… i’ve tried paper…nope…bamboo…not a good feel on the lips…. sooo.. i have my good ol’ plastic use it… wash it… and re-use it usually eight times… sometimes more…so i figure i have reduced my plastic straw rate by a factor of at least eight … a little not excessively so…( i even tuck one in my car to have for on the go…..)

Soaking your straw(s) in water with a denture tablet overnight will kill any bacteria left after cleaning it with a brush

I use regular garden variety plastic straws and have one now that is over 2 yrs. old. I have the mini bottle brush that fits straws and so they are kept clean and working. A straw gets trashed when it gets a split, where suction is lost.

Reusable straws= Covid? Perhaps, or no, but cannot stand NJ’s strictures this Summer….

I gave up on straws. When I go to a sit down restaurant, I drink from the cup/glass. I drink from a refillable container at home. And since I don’t go to a drive thru anymore, I don’t use a straw there either.
