My Dad, born in the late 19th century, had faded tattoos on his right hand and arm. I never asked him why he got those. I did ask him about WW1 and the 1917 flu. He did have stories about Prohibition. He never talked about the Great Depression. WW2, had a big impact on him. Now I need to speculate about those tattoos….

Years ago, my late BIL had his GF name tattooed on his arm. As so frequently happens, she broke up with him,, and he got “stuck” with it!!!
