THE GRAND ENTRANCE.

Great tribute to the Vatican fresco “The School of Athens” by Raphael! Clever indeed, Mr. Henry.

One kid almost killed himself on the stairs, Amelia making a killing at craps, and a mouse looking for crap to eat. The grand circle of life.

Loosely based on the famous fresco The School of Athens by Raphael. Very loosely.

That looks like a milkweed plant going to seed that Wallace is carrying. He holds it like its a scepter and he is king of the school.

Anybody see the seagull? I know he’s in there somewhere.

Spud-istotle is carrying the 2nd volume of “Poetics”, and he seems a bit distracted …

I can’t tell what kind of plant Wallace is holding.

Will Henry – How much to sponsor a Classics re-imagined series (could be hung in the Museum of Cartoon Art)? Rose in Joseph Wright of Derby’s Alchemist Discovering Phosphorus, Spud as Bartolomeo Passerotti’s Egg Thief, Amelia as Jacques-Louis David’s Napoleon Crossing the Alps, Sterling in Goya’s Saturn Devouring one of His Sons, and Wallace as Francis Drake (by whoever it was that did the best painting of Drake).

I see a mouse, a puppy and… Seagull!

Rose and the other kid giving each other the side eye – one wonders if, perhaps, they are scholastic rivals???

Where’s the seagull?

I had to go look at the original, this one is way better. No offense to Raphael.

I love that Rose has her own groupies. And yes, I joined the Latin Club in high school for one year. There were a whole three of us and the teacher. They didn’t bother having it the next year. That was out of 1200 students, grades 9-12.

So much going on here.

Is this the most undeniable example of a “Wallace” strip based on a great work of art? So much detail… even Mrs. Mac’s posture, turning back to gaze at someone? Something? [I also love that she is the stand-in for Zoroaster!] I am “guilty” of imagining references to such things where the artist did not intend such. Yeah, I’ve seen “Guernica” and “The Fall of Icarus” in “Wallace the Brave” too….

This happens every time Snug Harbor Elementary has a field trip to Athens, Georgia.

I’d love to have a black and white poster version of this, to color it. I mean, it’s spectacular this way, but would be fun to do it myself.

I loved this! It took me seconds to recognize what inspired Mr. Henry’s wonderful tableau. (I was an art history major.)
