I think of my mom whenever I peel potatoes. She always yelled if I took too much flesh off with the skin because her dad would beat her for wasting it.
My folks have been gone for decades and I still hear them saying things like that. Turn the light off when you leave the room. Stop wasting water in the shower.
Back in the day, people were more cautious with their money
Living through the depression does something to people!
My father was the tightwad in fact he was so tight and cheap. He would not give me the fee to learn to drive at school and I had to drop out of the class…..talk about embarrassing.
Looking at my last few water bills, I found that only about 3 percent of the bill has anything to do with the amount of water I use. The rest are fixed base charges and taxes that I’ll get charged no matter what. With the knowledge that even using no water at all would only save me 3 percent at best, I’m never going to worry about how much water I use ever again. If the conservationists want me to be concerned, they’re going to have to restructure the billing system to better and more fairly incentivize me.

Whenever I buy a bottle of water at a remote gas station, I hear my father’s voice in my head saying, “You paid a dollar for WHAT?”
