Earl might be similar to ‘Papa Schimmelhorn’, a fictional character in science fantasy writer Reginald Bretnor’s short stories: An elderly idiot/genius who subconsciously absorbed his knowledge by working as a janitor alongside Albert Einstein in his physics lab. His resulting abilities enable him to invent fantastic mechanisms.
So, Earl is a subconscious genius, and his full genius is like biscuits in an oven that are “squatting to rise.” He might in future be a Marvel or DC Comics superhero! (—
Out and about in the real world, every person I’ve run into claiming to be a genius has been far from it, though every one of them has been a know-it-all!
Plus when they say “I’m a genius!” and I reply “oh yeah? Spell it..” most of them haven’t been able to lol (though none of them have used a “J”!)
When you’re a kid as old as Nelson, you might think your parent(s) know everything. Then the big reality sets in at the age of 10 and up when it sinks in that they don’t really know it all. It’s a downer!
I saw a political cartoon. Trump: “My middle initial is ‘J’-stands for genius.” This joke has been around a long time, probably about as long as trump learned to spell.

Maybe Earl is so old he remembers when J and G were interchangeable. People who committed crimes got sent to gaol.
