Big deal—baby spiders do that every year. However, their “balloons” aren’t shaped like that—they just reel out a long line into the wind until it picks them up and carries them away from their nest (and away from their fratricidal siblings). One October in Oregon I was riding my bicycle and soon became entangled with a few dozen baby spiders floating along on their longline parachutes. While it was mildly distressing (yes, there were spiders on me, but teeny-weeny baby ones), I didn’t run away screaming like today’s Rose is Rose comic. I had places to go and things to do, so just brushed them off of me and continued cycling.

There are however giant Antarctic sea spiders (Decolopoda australis) that are 30 cm across. So don’t go swimming.

It’s always amazing to see how many people are clueless to the world around them.

I remember seeing them in Oklahoma back in 1977. Thousands upon thousands and probably millions upon millions.

I once heard that at any given time, you’re never more than 8 feet from a spider.

It’s called ballooning. Baby spiders do it to travel.

Maybe it’s like the balloon from Pearls Before Swine.

If the spiders are leaving, isn’t that a good sign?
