Just got a new car myself only to find out how true Frazz’s statement is in the last panel! My old one was 16 years old and started needing more attention and money to fix and maintain than it was actually worth. It was also a manual stick shift…and I had been driving one of those for the last 45 years and thought it might be time to get an automatic transmission. Unfortunately, CD players are no longer available in new cars and I don’t have a manner to listen to my favorite songs while driving any more!
That being said, the upgrade in technology is pretty nice and the seats are much more comfortable that what I had in my old car :0)
The latest design trend in luxury automobiles that is clearly introduced by the sales department and not the design department: full-size screens for the front passenger side. He’s not wrong about cars progressing towards becoming entertainment devices with an auxiliary transportation feature.
It’s a bit scary out there all right. I see lots of drivers, some distracted, some not, who share the characteristic that they have no idea the energies they’re dealing with. The destructive potential is pretty large and a moment’s inattention can be disastrous.
The trend that I’ve noticed is the different shapes they give the headlights now. Some of the cars coming up behind me in the dark look downright terrifying.
Anyone who texts while driving should get a mandatory minimum of 20 years without parole. Those who know these things say it the equivalent of pounding 4 drinks an hour as far as driving ability goes.
But it is not a new thing; I was once (1987) rear-ended by a fool reading a newspaper on the steering wheel.
I thought it was funny when, during COVID, a comedian said, “Now that we have learned to wash our hands, next week we will work on using our directional signal.” So many highway accidents could be prevented by just letting us know you are going to change lanes.
Has this kid never been in a car before? You can see this sort of stuff any day of the week just puttering around town, you don’t have to go on a trip to do it.
Since the other sane drivers are going just as fast as you are, you will never overtake them, and they will never overtake you. However, you’re guaranteed to eventually catch up to those dawdly jerks ahead of you, and those impatient ässholes in back will always end up tailgating you. Therefore it’s simple logic that the only other drivers you encounter will always be either jerks or ässholes. QED.
Being a tech hub, we get a bunch of those driverless cylonmobiles of various types. I don’t trust any of them even as much as the usual crowd of distracted humans.

Scariest drivers are the ones who are moving fast and not paying attention.

Interesting that she’s never been on a drive before.

Even with that, the biggest risk to driver safety is speeding. More people would walk away from accidents if everyone drove the speed limits.

Years ago I was driving a truck north on IS 287 in NJ, there was a driver using his knee to steer while playing a violin. I will never forget that.

Plus many states, including Michigan, have laws against holding your phone while driving.

Saw a woman texting and driving the other day. Made me so angry, I threw my beer at her. (Joking)

Here’s a mathematical proof of why the only kinds of drivers you encounter on the open road are either jerks or ässholes. We begin with definitions:
(a) A sane driver is anyone like you, who drives at exactly the right speed.
(b) A jerk is anyone who goes slower than that.
© An ässhole is anyone who goes faster.
QED.
