Interesting puzzle to ponder. At first the B.C. guys live in a sandy desert. Not a blade of green grass in sight. But they are feeding a bird whose bird house is surrounded by trees and bushes. Maybe the bird migrates for miles searching for food? Yet his fatness must hinder his ability to fly anywhere within a couple of yards?
Feeding bread to ducks can give either them or their offspring a condition called “angel wing,” where their feather growth is stunted and renders them incapable of flying. This is highly problematic or even fatal for them if they can’t fly out of places that lack food to places that have food as the seasons change. The cause is a fungus that naturally permeates all bread and that is harmless to most humans but has this effect on waterfowl.
I have read to not feed bread to birds or other wildlife. Fills their ‘stomach’ w/o any nutrients.“Ok, so we said that bread wasn’t great, but if that’s all you have, and your yard birds are cold and hungry, then it’s fine to feed small amounts. Brown bread is the best choice.” – a-z-animals
Don’t feed bread to birds because it’s very bad for them. From The Backyard Naturalist
Please don’t give wild birds bread, crackers or other human snack foods.
Bread has zero nutrition for wild birds. In fact, bread, crackers, chips and other human snacks are, in some ways, WORSE than feeding birds absolutely nothing. Why? Because bread is bad for birds.Bread is really, really bad for birds.
Basically, bread robs birds of the opportunity to take in the true nourishment their bodies require to survive.
Bread offers wild birds absolutely ZERO nutrition. ZERO. But, how could it possibly harm them, if it has zero effect? Simply, bread fills up a small stomach in a hurry. The bird doesn’t know the food is useless, but leaves feeling full and satisfied, nonetheless. This is a deadly combination of factors, considering how many calories birds need to eat in order to survive.
