In kindergarten we were walked to an intersection several times and taught to cross safely. “Look left, look right, look left again.” I still instinctively do this, in my S. European city where jaywalking is an art form.
“Then you’ll be sorry….” No, you won’t. You won’t be feeling anything. You’ll be dead. All experience of every kind stops. People have a remarkable facility for failing to get that.
Apparently Calvin has never seen Wile E. Coyote at work. He can fall from untold heights, get hit with anvil, and then plastered by a train or a truck . . .and get up and walk it off. Granted, he may be a little wobbly, but nevertheless he redoubles his efforts to catch the roadrunner.
remids me of a poem for some reason – too long to quote here “IF” by Rudyard Kipling. But then my second thought would be – Eat dessert first, you never know what happens next!
I find that “living for the moment” still leaves plenty of time for safety. Last week a fork lift backed into the umbrella of the outdoor table where I was dining at a restaurant on the dock. It jolted the table like the biggest earthquake I ever experienced. The owner just laughed it off. If it happens again, OSHA will continue the dialog for me.
Look both ways numerous times before stepping on the road. There have been times while driving that I have looked both ways numerous times to make a turn, and just like that, a vehicle appears out of nowhere. Luckily I was able to complete the turn before anything happened!

Does Calvin ever learn from Hobbes’ wisdom??

If Calvin was real, maybe he would be the youngest philosopher or the first child philosopher.

The problem with “Live for the moment” is when you have no money. So you usually end up working a job and living for the weekend.

I used to sound out my thoughts as I worked though my troubled teen years, some how speaking out loud made my analysis seem more focused.

A better motto would be ‘look both ways before crossing the road’.

In these days of the zombie apocalypse, i.e. people nose in their mobile phones. Just looking would be nice.

I seem to recall seeing this one and recognizing how profound it was with Hobbes response motto being a double entendre.

Hobbes nailed it. Bravery is one thing. Caution is another. Either can lead to longer life but one offers more possibilities.

Cement truck or fire engine racing to a fire? A car here went skidding sideways for half of a block before going through the front of the building.

I will have to use that one (literally and metaphorically)
