Funny how back in May of ‘23 all the parents were taking their kids to school and there was only one bus rider. Now since November there’s been too many students…or is it too few drivers? Whatever. Can’t get logic get in the way of comedy like today’s…whatever that statement is. Is the implication that households with antennae must be poor and need bus service?
How can there possibly be a shortage of bus drivers, after all, there is a group of people who rant, rave, foam at the mouth and loose their minds over the fact that there are American Jobs, and bus driving in America would be an American job, that needs to be filled by out of work Americans.
Oh wait, driving a bus is a lot like picking lettuce, or working in a slaughterhouse, not an American Job that an American wants to do.
In Chicago, I just read of a rideshare service for school age kids. One parent takes a number of students to a school along with their own The cost was reportedly under a dollar a mile, the drivers get credits they can use to transport their own kids.
OK I was with Batty on this until today’s middle panel. It is not the large number of riders that is the problem. The shortage of drivers is the problem. Lena should know this and if Batty truly wants to examine the shortage problem he should have Lena stating it accurately. If she had then Green Hat’s line would still work.
If they have a shortage of drivers, then they must have a surplus of buses. Therefore the obvious solution is to install trailer hitches and have one bus (with a driver) tow another (without a driver). Hilarity will ensue when they get into Keesterman’s neighborhood.

“We?” That isn’t your decision to make, Lena, it’s up to the school board. And I don’t think they’ll allow you to hire hit men to reduce the numbers.

The school board should have bought double decker buses.

Every time I see the outside of that building, I expect to see a metal gate with the words “macht arbeit frei” melded into it..

Lena installed trailer hutches onto the buses and rented U-Haul trailers to be converted with extra seating.

Only pickup the kids that aren’t disruptive on the bus or in the school. Make revoking bus privileges the first step in discipline.

Why don’t they, I don’t know…hire more drivers?

Hitch a flat bed trailer to the back of each bus for the extra kids to ride on.

So… what’s the cause of the “bus driver shortage”? I’m betting it’s Lena’s fault—she had drivers fired to clear a spot for her on the bowling team.
