Hmph! When I was a kid (Oh no, not again) we didn’t have no new fang-led sugar bomb. Nope, Ma believed in diet and exercise. Plenty of exercise lifting that tablespoon between the sugar bowl and cereal bowl and repeat.
I used to love them when I was a kid, Cocoa Puffs were awesome. All the good old cereals aren’t the same, Froot Loops, cocoa puffs, Alpha Bits are all bland as hell.
I laugh…and then, I remember…when a childhood friend of mine used to put 6 or 7 spoons of sugar on his Sugar Frosted Flakes because “I can’t taste the sugar”…lol
@SUSAN NEWMAN,Yesterday Calvin was tired, and Dad might have been fired. Today Calvin is wired, and Dad might be hired. And I am mired, in poetic punnery.
I was the only one in our extended family that drank coffee with sugar (some did use cream). Fond memories of the holiday gatherings when dad would grip and complain about having to find the sugar bowl in the back of the cabinet for me. Usually, I had to scrape the sugar to get a spoon full as it had hardened from being stored so long. Today I use honey rather than granulated sugar. He would joke with mom about me maybe not being one of his. SWEET memory for sure.
About this time, IIRC, the big cereal makers began to move away from overly-excessively sweet cereals (some well over 50% sugar) to merely excessively sweet cereals. And renaming them—remember Sugar Pops, or Sugar Smacks?++++++++Coincidence? Perhaps. . . .
Yep, this strip was the debut of “Chocolate Frosted Sugar Bombs”. I never could stand real sweet stuff like that. I remember one time mom grabbing the frosted version of toasted oats by mistake. Much too sweet, I couldn’t eat them without rinsing the frosting off in a colander first.
Additional sugar added to something already called “Chocolate Frosted Sugar Bombs”?!?! No wonder Calvin always seems to be bouncing off the walls and ceiling . . . not to mention the short attention span he has while in school!
When I was a kid I put sugar on my Frosted Flakes. Now, the “one third less” version is almost too sweet. I thought I was avoiding excess sugar by eating a plain shredded wheat type cereal by Kashi, until I looked at the label. It’s really good, though. Hmmm….9 grams of sugar in my Honey Nut Cheerios.
In order to maximize your cereal, eat it with condensed milk. If THAT comes in chocolate, so much the better. Afterwards, instead of breaking windows with baseballs, Spiff the Spaceman will be flying out of them. His mother’s reaction should be interesting, to say the least….
Back in the day when I was Calvins’s age, I didn’t (and still don’t) like chocolate as a flavor. Howver when I eat cereals like Captain Crunch, they’ve got way to much sugar even now for my liking – and I drink about 5 Pepsis a day ( more for the caffeine).
In response to Marg, I’m positive this was the first appearance of the cereal, but in it’s second appearance, I think it was called ‘’Crunchy Sugar Bombs’‘, but Bill got rid of that and stuck with ’’Chocolate Frosted Sugar Bombs.’’

The makers of CFSB’s should heed this consumer feedback and fortify their cereal with sugar glazed CFSB’s.
