Brad: "I'm goin' on a job interview"
TJ: "You found something?"
Brad: "Yeah. I'll really clean up on this job"
Brad: "I'm here to apply for the cleanup position"
Uhhh…ok. Brad is a former firefighter. He has EMT experience. He could apply to any EMT position, or firefighter in a nearby town. And he should be getting severance and pay…..why is he going back to fast foods? Doesn’t make sense, Greg.
Happened to me a few times. My wife would berate me that she could get basic jobs, but “obviously” I wasn’t trying. Heck, I shovelled pig manure all day long on our farm, nothing is beneath me conditions wise. But I missed out on call centre positions because I was too “managerial”. They actually said that. I can quickly think of three occasions I missed out for that sort of reason. Now, my boss is the toughest one I have ever had, never gives me days off, no sick leave, no bonuses, tighter than a fish’s youknowwhat, but at least I am not over qualified. Part of the package when you are self employed.Brad will probably get a manager who is experienced at dealing with subordinates and keeping them under the thumb.
What a loser. Brads ambition couldn’t fill a thimble. Now that Toni has assured Brad that she would love him no matter what he does for a living, he doesn’t consider any job out of bounds. As long as he can walk to work, the job is a good job. I guess Dirk was right. Brad really is a nobody.
When I read your post, it hit me. Greg has not introduced UI and has Brad taking a job that he is way overqualified for because Greg wants more people to do just that. Stay off of UI and take any job you can get. Gregs personal plan to solve the unemployment problem.
If you have even a batchlors degree, you automatically are made “assistant manager trainee”, which means you work only on weekends are exempt from minimum salary protection.
I think Brad is great some people would think they were to good to take a job like this but those who have real pride feel working of any kind is better than sitting home watching TV
in my state i had to keep a log showing that i had applied/interviewed for at least three jobs per week in order to maintain UC. also, UC stops as soon as you accept a job.
Brad got his Firefighter’s position and training while working at Weinne World. No reason he can’t keep looking while working there. Most career positions open doors with a resume, not an interview.
For those who think that Dirk will be working at WW: Last time we saw him, he was picking up the neighborhood garbage as a trash man. If Brad is gong to run into Dirk again, it’ll proably be when he’s taking the WW garbage out to the dumpster. =-)
He got RIF’ed. As stated, usually they get severance, or at the very least he could get on unemployment. Also, as someone mentioned, he could get on as an EMT. I’m pretty disappointed he’s at weenieworld.
Aw. Nobody wants to go back to their first job which is usually fast food restaurant, family restaurant, movie theater, grocery store, children arcade, pizza place, etc. My first job was McDonald’s in high school. When I got RIFed, I got on UI. Those places make you work more than what they pay you for, and don’t do good for your self-esteem. The managers at those places are nightmares. I decided to stick to my field…teaching. I now teach at community college…took me a year to get this job and get off UI. Worth it. If you work at those places, you’d find little time for job hunting to get out of those places.
Just dumb down your resume to counter the overqualified excuse. Most important is to network, employers prefer referrals from people they know and trust.
On the one hand I really feel sorry for the guy, BUT my respect for the character and for Greg has gone out the ceiling for the example he is setting. He’s doing what he has to do to get a job, not waiting on a handout or running back home to mom and dad. I really hope this works out good for Brad!!!
Well, tomorrow’s strip will help define just what kind of a job Brad will have at WeenieWorld. It may be more mature and dignified that what we’re expecting.
I don’t think that being a fire fighter was all that important to Brad. It became more so after he met Toni. If Toni hadn’t pushed him, he would have given up the idea. Now that he knows he has Toni, no matter what he does for a living, he has no ambition at all.
I think this arc shows us Greg’s feelings about Unemplotyment Insurance. He doesn’t believe people should spend time looking for a job that closely matches their skills. Just get out there and take whatever you can get as fast as you can get it. As long as you are earning money, who cares if it is not enough to meet your responsibilities.
This is a sign of the times: Jobs are hard to come by, and the larger a gap between the time you lost your job, and the time you get another, the bigger danger that companies won’t even look at your resume’. Nowdays if you have been unemployed for only six months, you might as well kiss the good jobs goodbye.
Overqualified is one of the reasons many HR managers have turned me down over the years when I’ve applied for something requiring less education than I’ve got; and as for applying for an EMT or firefighting position, you have to keep in mind that such a position might not be open… or, it might have many qualified applicants at once, some of which are more qualified than Brad. That’s one of the fun aspects of trying to find a full-time college teaching gig with an MA—lots of qualified applicants, but a limited number of open positions.
He would have been better served by continuing to look fro a “real job” while collecting unemployement from his last one. At least until it runs out. Hard to look for a “real job” when you are occupied working a cr@p one.

…and that’s why you don’t play around with a comic strip’s time-space continuum.

Weenie World deja vu.

Quite humble, isn’t he? I remember how I felt when I went back to a call centre job a decade ago. Didn’t like it at all.

Hey, if he get’s the job, he may meet Anthony himself…

Yeah, just when you thought it was safe to eat a hot dog without thinking of a congressman….

Even though it’s a comic, good for Brad. There’s no such thing as a job “beneath you” when times are tight.

Congrats to Brad for having the courage to swallow his pride and apply for the most menial of jobs at Weenie World!

Brave and honorable. Something until something better comes around. Still, you’d think he’d apply for unemployment?

That or they want people so highly qualified they whine they can’t fill the slot but they ask for the impossible dream.

What do want to bet Dirk is the manager?

Brad’s previous stint at Weenie World could be called WWI, so now he is getting ready for WWII.

I never understood why some places ‘requires’ a good outfit for interview considering the job and nature of company.

Seeing as this position involves working with numerous chemical compounds, we’re looking for at least a bachelor’s in chemistry, master’s preferred.
