Ned: Hey, Danae...I've got a summer vacation present for you. Danae: Cool...what is it? Ned: A soccer ball! Now instead of sitting around all summer watching TV, you can get out for some fun and exercise...maybe even play in a league! Do I hear a "thank you, daddy"? Danae: Sure...just as soon as you stop blocking my view of the TV with that vile orb of sweaty horror.

Is Danae the ONLY US citizen who understands that Football, as the rest of the world calls it, is not a girl’s game? And she isn’t real….!

Dad will regret it years later when grown up Danae buys him an exercise bike for Father’s Day! Hint hint.

I’m afraid I’m with Danae on this one. But give me a baseball or softball and a glove, and I’ll be out of your hair all day long. See you at supper time.

so, the reason I never pressured my kids to do sports, was because I didn’t suck at them? And the reason my wife wanted them to take dancing, was because she stunk at that when she was a kid?

Danae should not be allowed to procreate.

Soccer & Volleyball are two sports where I think it is more entertaining to watch the ladies play than the men.

instead of a soccer ball, how about the kinect/wii/move version of fifa? then, she can bend it like beckham.

I don’t think Einstein ever participated in sports, aside from the occasional casual bicycle ride.

Danae a team player? I don’t THINK so!

Admit it, Pops — the real reason for the soccer ball is to get her out of the chair so you can watch TV!

A few years ago at a state fair, a business had some stationary bikes set up with generators for small analog black and white TVs. The technology exists, though today’s digital TVs are a little more picky about constant power levels.

It can go the other way as well. My dad was a seven sport man at his (admittedly) small high school. I spent two miserable years in Little League baseball before my dad realized I was not remotely gifted and let me escape. Don’t know if it scarred me or not but it sure did nothing for my nine year old self-esteem. I really was bad at it.

Great timing on this strip, Wiley! How did you know, weeks ago, that the US women would be playing for the title today?

sounds like another eyewitness to parenting Fail. this is so true, unfortunately. and these are the types you pull the blinds and shut off the lights when you see them coming, too. Al Bundy-ites.

On a completely different topic, am I the only one who noticed how all Danae needs in this one is a lollipop to make her look exactly like Herbie Popnecker?

Sounds like something Stewie from “Family Guy” would say, too.

Football, whether soccer (real football!) or “American football” is a team sport played in youth. As “fans” age, it becomes sitting in front of a boob-tube with a beer, and a fat belly. Running, as in cross country, cycling, swimming, skiing, hiking for pleasure (or just walking), even golf (when played, not watched) are lifetime activities that keep folks healthy. Team sports become “spectator sports” of little or no health value, in fact, they become dangerous. Danae is more the type to hand a rope and light saber and tell her to go outside, build a tree house and rope swings, and fight off invaders.

I was really lousy at team sports. I had no-one to teach me at home. However, I was in ptetty good shape most of my life, until injuries took there toll. I guess because I joined the USMC and kept in shape afterwards.

I meant to add that Dad can lead Danae to sports but, ultimately, she will have to decide if she will work to be good at them or not.

we have a lot of charity driven sports for kids at our inner urban schools – sports provide lessons in teamwork, fitness, increase in school grades, decrease in aggressive behaviour, a reason to remain in school and graduate. Did I miss anything?

Whoa! Deja Vu!
I never got him a soccer ball, but I’ve been on the receiving end of just such looks from my son, and lived those last 7 panels again and again, for various reasons.
When you care enough to give the gift they couldn’t stand.

What 4 billlion on the planet call futbol, we call soccer. ‘Nuff said. Don’t limit Danae’s activities tho. There’s swimming, basketball, ice dancing and there’s always the violin. We must move Danae towards what “she” loves, even though she doesn’t know it…. Sorry no poem… Yeah like you care…

While I am sorry for the U.S. girls loss, and I applaud their success and effort, I am very happy for the Japanese girls win, they deserved it, and lets just say, that Japan could use a win.

I had no interest in any physical activities as a child, but started ballet at 23 and am still dancing 40 years later. If folks find something they like to do, they’ll take it up and enjoy it a lot more than if it is forced on them as kids.

I never was any good at any sports (except running -until I twisted my ankle). My 2 oldest boys were both all-rounds in HS gymnastics. Both went to college with scholastic scholarships, but the eldest made extra spending money coaching the gymnastics team there at Boston U, as well as writing for one of his professors-he also graduated summa cum lauda. 2nd son went to local SIU and graduated cum lauda in finance. He was hired directly from school but has progressed steadily in marketing helocopters-recently switched to their competition to stay in the SW (his family prefer it as do I). 3rd son did wrestling in HS and now is a licenced surveyor.
