The funny thing is that pop culture gets recycled. 3-D movies, anyone? Ever compare “Independence Day” with “Earth vs. the Flying Saucers,” or “Pearl Harbor” with “Wings”? Viagra and goat-gland transplants?
A hypno-coin! That explains so much! FA’s surrealism always feels way over my head – it renders my brain useless and I have no response – and yet I just can never look away. From it or the blog. And now I finally understand why! sigh Well, that’s a relief.
When Oral Roberts made his $8 million plea, and got it, it wasn’t always mentioned that the bulk of the money came from a gambler. Oral wasn’t too proud to accept it.
The popular culture of my parents was important to me for being able to understand all the obscure references in the Warner Brothers cartoons that were made before my time.
Speaking of pop culture WB cartoons, in Baseball Bugs, there is one where the loudspeaker sings, “What’s the score, boys, what did Bugs Bunny do, what’s with the Carrot League baseball today?” My son asked about that, and it’s clearly a parody of something, but it’s way before my time. Anyone know? One of those lifelong curiosities I’ve had. :)
Wikipedia references it, but only describes it as a “radio-style jingle.”
To not care about the pop culture references of the various generations… be it kid to parent or parent to kid, or some other permutation….. to me simply speaks of a rudeness and lack of care for the person whose pop culture references you “don’t care about”. To me it seems a very selfish, and self-serving attitude. Whether you are young or old, you live in a society of various ages of people… and to only stick with the generation’s pop culture references you happen to “fit in with” only leaves YOU as less of a person and less able to communicate and understand others around you. This is the first Frog Applause in a while that I think is a miss in my opinion. To me it feels rude and nasty and just mean.
Well, what part of “pop” don’t you understand? It comes, it echoes briefly, and is gone. I don’t think his kids (if he admits to fathering them) will care much about tramp stamps and tweeting.
To Teresa: You have definitely mastered the art of provoking comments. FA is catching up with Dick Tracy and Calvin. Way to go!!
I don’t understand the dice probabilities in the FB. For example, there are 36 possible combinations for a roll of two dice. Three of these will yield a total of four: 2+2, 1+3, 3+1. This makes the odds 3/36 or 1/12. The FB entry says the odds are 2:1 against. I would say 12:1.
Maybe he means the probability of making your four before rolling a seven. Since I didn’t know this, it must not be worth knowing, but now I’m curious.
All the great items on the blog lately; I especially liked the posting about the young hero, and the reference to what Teresa has posted about herself, although I’m sorry that the picture of her making apple pie had to be taken down due to stalkers…
I have long preferred to have my news filtered through the comics pages rather than in the raw form that appears in the headlines… Some of the best cartoons about Oral Roberts being called home were one in which he is portrayed standing on the ledge of a tall building, tin cup in hand, as a voice from the sky calls, “Jump.” and another in which an angel comes to tell God that the slimy creature managed to collect the money after all, to which God replies, “Can’t I just slap him around a bit anyway?” The first one was part of a trilogy called “God’s Three Stooges” and included one of Jimmy Swaggart calling home from a cheap motel (“I’ll be working late tonight, dear”).

This guy seems to think that his opinion is important. I suspect his dad doesn’t care either.

TERESA Dancing looks like the way out of our blue. Been a while. Do I ask, “Hey Toots, let’s go cut a rug”? Oh, re-read the comic.
