Transcript:
Captain: "Daytona! Hose- south side! Degroot! Roof vent, NOW! Move, people! This fire isn't putting itself out!!"
Captain: "Hook that supply! Hustle, hustle!!"
Toni: "And you thought Weenieworld was tough"
Brad: "This is WAY better"
A few remarks: First, It seems odd to start a new story on a Saturday. Maybe the Ann/TJ story couldn’t continue because it would spill over into next week. Second, I’ve been to many fire scenes and have never seen a chief yelling at his people to hustle or move. Firefighters are professionals that need no exhortations. Third, venting a roof is one of the more hazardous aspects of fire fighting. Many firefighters have lost their lives doing this. The fire, unbeknownst to the firefighter, can burn the supports and cause the roof to collapse into the building. I’m wondering if this will happen here and if this time Toni saves Brad’s life?
SCBA- Self Contained Breathing AparatusThey are probably not wearing them as both sound like they are doing an Exterior attack. Toni on Hose and Brad Ventilating the roof…….or maybe Greg just forgot to draw the tanks.
Interesting to see Brad and Toni at work and to see the colors of their equipment—yellow helmets, khaki overalls, glow-green trucks…. Locally, our department wears the older, more traditional red helmets and dark blue overalls and drives predominantly red trucks.
Note that Brad didn’t comment on firefighting being tough – no question about that – just that it is WAY better than WW. Unless Brad was working out while laid off, or the time was very short, I’d think he’s a little out of shape for this work. Maybe he will have a problem on the roof.
Brad should be wearing his SCBA if he’s going to be ventilating — once he opens up a hole the smoke will come pouring out. Maybe he just hasn’t put on the mask yet. “South” side, Captain? Whatever happened to A, B, C, or D side? Better go back and refresh your memory of incident command!
Nice to know lots of people have watched Back draft, Ladder 49, Emergency and other fire/rescue movies and tv shows ;) It’s a cartoon folks, not a documentary lol.
“If you WORK for a living, then sooner or later you’re gonna get YELLED at.”
Also I have to DISAGREE with some of the Posters here about the direction of next week’s strip.
I don’t think it’ll be a continuation of TODAY’S strip or MORE of the ‘Ann Effiel DESTROYS TJ saga’. (Please DESTROY Him, Ann!!!)
IMHO, I think we’re gonna finally get back to Luann’s attempts to separate her ‘NOT boyfriend’, Quill from Tiffany.(I’m REALLY interested to see if the DeGroot parents ALLOW their 16 year old daughter to go to LA, ALONE.) I could be WRONG, though.
Now an intertwining story could be that Brad & Toni respond to a fire at . . . Weenie World!! What a moment that would be to have Brad & Toni rescue snarky Ann Eiffel after she’s passed out from smoke inhalation. The fire would be accidentally started by none other than . . . T.J.!
I’d hate to see Brad hurt on what must be the first week (at least) back on the job. I think we see the captain shouting just so we know what positions they’re taking and I guess we have all heard of injured firefighters from roofs – does not portend well, so I hope we’re wrong (and just when TJ was finally being such fun!)
They both have their SCBA’s on, as does the Capt. (note the shoulder straps) just not the mask on the face until they go inside. And no, they might still not be at the same station, as more than one station’s machines will run in together to a fire. Remember, they were at different stations when Brad saved Toni when she took the dive off the ladder.
I agree that there will be a new theme to next week’s strip. This does wrap up the week(temporarily) . Brad is happy doing his real job, TJ is happy bugging Ann…
Greg the talented pro, changing directions so we don’t get bored, and doing some very nice artwork in the process. So now we have several stories waiting to climax……Quill, Luann, and Tiffany…TJ and Ann…. Gunther and Rosa…..and will someone please get Puddles a nice Christmas toy and a rawhide chewy?
I love this. It’s literally the only cartoon I read anymore. I’m so glad brad is back to doing what he loves to do. You can see it in his face. Very well drawn strip.
I can easily forgive any inaccuracies since the story lines are interesting and grab your attention. Not like hollywood is really accurate either, and people pay to watch movies….lol
Regarding the question of the location of the arsonist: Not all fires are caused by arsonists.
Regarding the idea about SCABA with the first A for air: Folks tend to breathe air or oxygen. Pure oxygen is dangerous in a fire, so air would be a bit redundant.
And, yep, most called them Scott air packs just as most call tissue Kleenex and many call any soda a Coke.
As to masks: two thoughts, First, the reader needs to know who’s involved. (consider all the movies with people in masks where the lights glow inward to show us the face, it would blind the user in real life but is needed for us to know who’s there, second, they aren’t actually in a situation requiring air at the moment, best to use it when needed.
Regarding TJ: more power to him, maybe he can turn Ann into a human being.
Regarding where’s Luann: This strip is rich with many interesting characters, more power to the artist
if he goes on a roof, he dammwell better be suited up. a fall-through into a compromised area could kill him he’s if not, and leave the captain liable for manslaughter if it’s written down as policy
So Toni is assigned to an Engine Company, and Brad is on a Truck? Venting is a Truck Company job. YAY, Greg for making the Apparatus green. Green is a much more visible color than red. He forgot the Scotchlite striping, though.
Love the sophistication and knowledge of some posters, and their willingness to share. We not only enjoy the strip, but we learn something nearly every day. Thank you!
They are wearing something, as the black straps are roughly the way SCBA straps run. They should also be in Nomex hoods to protect face and neck. The still can be at separate stations, as there are two trucks there. Good to see them back at work!
What a great turnaround!A week ago he was crap getting kicked around, now he is back to being a Man facing mortal challenges. We all would rather be doing something rugged and manly. And with his Best Gal by his side …I could almost break into song about Lumberjacks.
@FatTonyBalducci,Looks to me like they do..the shoulder straps are visible, but the hose coils hide Toni’s tank, and you can just see the shadow of Brad’s. Remember too, that the tanks are worn regulators down, especially with the newer Scott-Air Pacs.
Oh my word you people really over think things maybe this particular comic is just celebrating him being back in the thick of things doing what he loves.
If you look at the straps on the outside of their bunker coats you would note that those are part of the SCBA’s. The cartoonist chose not to get too caught up in the minutia and concentrated on the dialogue.
This is one former firefighter who knows from where he speaks!!!
I will offer this one bit of criticism:Greg! We wear nomex fire hoods along with our helmets. This protects our ears and necks from super-heated air/gases, flaming embers and debris from our skin! The snood effect is dangerous in that it is made of nylon which melts at relatively low temperatures.
We know Toni has beautiful blonde hair. It doesn’t need to be exposed to danger.

I’m guessing all the jokes about them being “hot” for each other have already been done for several years now…

That is the chin strap for the helmet. Also, it’s interesting to see that Toni wears a snood to keep her hair up while working.

needless to say, Brad could not look happier to be back to putting out fires instead of being that bitch’s whipping boy.

So much better to have work that’s WORTH doing. Not soul-lessly filling corporate artificially-induced “wants”…
Besides we need a comparison of the send-up TJ is making with the helium-hose up Eiffel’s skirt…the flap is beginning…
