What Calvin says, that’s the case with a lot of kids. That would have been the case with me, but I had a set of encyclopedias and no one told me you weren’t supposed to read them for fun. Now, I’m grateful for those.
@thatnicecollegeguy, marmar in MI, margueritem, Tog, and others (et al)I’m with you guys! “A little knowledge is a dangerous thing”, so don’t stop with a little knowledge! Go for it! Read the encyclopedia cover to cover, even (Snagglepuss)
@Remington Mandel,Of (water)course you did! You can ‘bank’ on it! Did you get riparian rights from the dictionary, the encyclopedia, or personal experience? Btw, we are cognizant of Calvin’s extensive vocabulary and almost have to memorize the dictionary to keep up with him in that area. Maybe Calvin can impress Miss Wormwood after school with a few choice words.
“Useless” information sure comes in handy on Final Jeopardy where all the other nerds up there with you who can recite the Declaration of Independence backwards and divide by zero don’t know what Nightwing’s real name is.
I can recall lyrics to hundreds (possibly thousands) of songs, but I would hardly call them useless. Try singing Patti Page’s “Old Cape Cod” or The Cure “Friday I’m In Love” without them affecting your mood. It’s like free drugs, and I for one find that extremely useful.
I happen to live about five miles east of Sacagewea State Park here in Washington. It is the place that Lewis & Clarkdiscovered where the Columbia And Snake rivers come together to form their highway to the sea. I could not believe all of the comments from people who didn’t know who they were! There are even two main streets in Pasco, Washingtonthat have the names of Lewis and Clark respectively. Really !
It might be a toss-up as to which set of knowledge is the most useless (and for whom). I heard recently that the Encyclopedia is no longer going to be published.

Lewis and Clark didn’t find the Oregon Trail as believed. An Indian woman of Mandan heritage named Sacagawea led them to it.
