wow, Calvin was psychic.

That’s my plan.

People who don’t vote are less of a problem than people who don’t read real newspapers and can’t follow complex issues, but still vote.

Always some truth behind the humor.

But being “concerned” and saying something loudly, no matter how ill-informed, is soooo much fun.

I believe Calvin’s script (which Watterson wrote) is intended to voice the ignorance and idiocy of a population hurtling downhill toward disaster. Calvin, in this role, is not a detatched observer, he’s the author of impending doom. But you knew that, right?

I believe that Bill W. was pointing out that if one believes in democracy – and I gave up my faith in it decades ago – then one has a personal responsibility to participate in it. It has no hope of working at all, otherwise, and will inevitably decline (sometimes at breakneck speed) toward disaster.Of course, one reason I gave up my faith in democracy is that I know the decline will come whether one participates in the process or not. It’s a misguided solution to the problem of human nature, one that misrepresents the relationship between power and corruption as something it isn’t.

Oh, my… One DOES have the right to complain, according to the Constitution. All eligible voters should vote, but people have the right to complain, whether they vote or not. Now whether their complaints are justified, well, THAT’S another issue.

Ironically, following complex issues in the mass media and voting doesn’t seem to be working out, either.

Sadly, if everyone voted this country would be declining even faster than it is now.

When he wrote this back in the 90s there was no Tea Party yet, so I think he was incredibly insightful to see 20 years into the future as this describes the Tea Party/Knowing-Nothings to a T.

I get a big kidk out ot reading the comix but to many of you people are to critical of them. Wake and have a good laugh rather than be to critical of them.

I dont want to live where freedom of speech is restricted in that regard.”-Our government recognizes and upholds people’s rights, but also curtails said rights if individuals break certain laws. Shirking your legal responsibilities is a sure way to have your rights abridged.

-However-I think the “if you don’t vote you don’t have the right to complain” theory is referring to your moral standing rather than inalienable rights. If you don’t vote, you still have the legal and innate human right to complain, but from a moral standpoint, you’ve given up the legitimacy to voice your opinion. Of course, not having a moral leg to stand on has never stopped us from complaining….

Yeah, I miss Hobbes comments as well.

Calvin must have an unlimited supply of wagons. Didn’t they wreck one just yesterday?

From JBS (even before) to Rush, the numbers willing to accept fanatics, rather than facts, and actually speak loud, but do little, to IMPROVE things have increased. Ignorance HAS become a badge of honor to an even greater extent, oddly, in our “information age”. Is it the credit, or the fault, of the “internet”, that DIS information, travels faster than information?

I used to vote. Then we elected a president that actually lost the election (actual counted votes). If I got the opportunity to vote out lobbyists and the outdated electoral college, I would vote again. Then my vote might actually mean something. Until then, I’m done with this corrupt system we call American politics.

Then you indeed deserve the government you get.

Back then, there was not a Marxist in the White House.

Never say never, Calvin! I predict that when you become a grown-up, you WILL read the newspapers, you WILL follow complex issues and you WILL vote because there will be too many important subjects close to your heart not to. While I’ve never felt my vote really mattered all that much, I keep going back to the polls, hoping that one day, my vote WILL matter and our once great country will become great once again.

Never in recent history was there greater voter turnout than when Obama was elected. You wouldn’t know it now. All you ever hear and read anymore is nothing but complaints about him. Voting is no guarantee you’ll get what you want.

Some go so far as to blame non-voters for the bad government the voters elected. If I didn’t vote for him/her…then it is not my fault! I can complain to the voters all I want about their bad decisions.

Calvin is saying that there is no genuine political solution to societies’ problems. And he is right. It’s just right vs. left in grasping for resources the politicians did not create or add. So the cycle of force goes round and round.

You better damn well CARE. When we’re in the shape of Greece, Spain, France, etc, you’ll be asking “how did this happen?”
