I live in Van Buren county in Michigan. On painted signs around here, there still seems to be some dispute as to which way the middle line in the letter N goes……..we seem to be running about fifty fifty either way………Of course I’m dyslexic, it’s kind of academic to me…so no matter which way it’s supposed to be, I’ll still get it backwards….
Michigan blue? it’s blue? lol. a long time ago, but recently? the whole anti black, women democracy of late, special town managers, the take over of bl,ack towns. the outlawing of women in the state rep to say the “v” word.
Earlier this year, my daughters’ old Alma Mater, Lakewood High School, had a sign on its marquee that said, “LAEPING TO LITERACY NIGHT 6:30 P. M.” Oops! I drove back and forth by that sign all weekend without noticing.http://www.foxnews.com/us/2012/02/28/sign-promoting-literacy-night-at-florida-high-school-misspelled-principal-notes/
“The terms red states and blue states came into use in the United States presidential election of 2000 on an episode of the Today show on October 30, 2000 to refer to those states of the United States whose residents predominantly vote for the Republican Party or Democratic Party presidential candidates, respectively. According to AlterNet and The Washington Post, the terms were coined by journalist Tim Russert, during his televised coverage of the 2000 presidential election.”
This was the first time a color scheme became popular and consistant nationwide.Prior to 2000, the colors were used by all parties indiscriminately. One party might color their opponent red in the east Coast campaigns, but blue in the West Coast campaign, or blue this year and red the nest year. Why Red and Blue?Red, White and Blue, the colors of the US flag. White doesn’t work well in print media, red and blue stand out better.
A question for you…is going “Pro” worth it to a lowly commenter? (Been thinking about it, but the listed bennies in the Help forum don’t sell me; perhaps you can tell me a practical benefit?)
Saskfan: I found it ironic that when the Trail of Tears got the “savage” Cherokee out of their slightly gold-bearing homeland, the adult literacy rate of the European invaders was just over 30%, while the Cherokee were at 95%. There were the printing presses and type fonts of the Cherokee Phonix on some of those wagons. Three columns in English, two in Cherokee because a syllabary takes up less space than an alphabet.
And the Greens got their party colour automatically.
I’ve often thought of that. Red (for me) says “Soviets” or Communists. Blue was a Whig (conservative) color, and most of the world followed them. Even Washington’s Buff and Blue were conservative revolutionary colors.

Trusted, well the west side is very nice and very pretty, the dunes, Lake Michigan, the wineries…..did I mention the wineries?. The other side? Pretty sad….BTW, a view of the Saginaw Bay is pretty dismal right now….

She asked who labeled the R as red. That’s what I answered.
Red as in red-blooded Americans,Blue as in blue collar.
Or any other color justification you want.
I’m old enough to remember Commie Reds and Pinko fellow travelers.
Today pink has entirely different meanings.
Things change.
The Southern states used to be solidly Democrats, and New England used to be solidly Republicans.
