Yikes…I started reading the original strip later than this, and never realized what a jerk John could be. LOL He was a lot more mellow later on. If I was Ellie, I would smack him!
John, John, once again you have caused a beautiful evening to go ‘up in smoke’. It is going to be a quiet ride home and an even quieter night—sleeping on the couch.
yes john is such an ignorant fool. no concept of others, apparently, or his wife. this also doesn’t speak well of Elly to find such a flaming idiot like John worth marrying. John is so past simple, not even childlike. but who knows. John is so insensitive.
As a wife, you can’t go all silent and brood about it. Men tend to have no idea what you’re angry about, even when it’s obvious to everyone else. That’s the time to square your shoulders and tell him (without yelling) that what he just did is completely unacceptable and you won’t put up with it. That a man doesn’t make his wife feel that way and you need an apology. They’ll probably respond with asking how it made you feel any way considering the comment was about another woman and had nothing to do with you. They don’t connect their attention on another woman as being a reflection of you or a show of disrespect to you. To them it’s a completely separate issue. You’ve got to connect it for them.
And no one’s mentioned Elly’s gossipy prying! For once I think John’s comment is a good come-uppence for her. You brought her up, Elly. Don’t be surprised at John’s perspective.
Sorry, but women have to understand it is natural for men to look and look a second time if they appreciate what they saw. Women look also, but mostly at other women, who they might think of as competition.Any woman who has problems with that has self worth problems. If your man stays around that is love, if he strays, maybe it is your attitude.
My X was much like that; he thought nothing of flirting with any young waitress, not to mention the time he took me to a place with a belly dancer (and became part of the show). So very glad to have a good man now, even if we can only be together part of the year. He likes being able to continue saving while covering his expenses by working until he really chooses to retire.
I am going against the consensus here. I believe if one brings up another person that the spouse/companion should speak their opinion, also. Elly brought it up, as gossip. Jon said she was a good looking woman. Has nothing to do with how Jon feels about Elly. However, there are some women that feel everything said about another woman is a put down. To me that sort of thing is juvenile and uncalled for.
Well the point of comics is to be funny about situations, and this is funny because John put foot in mouth speaking before thinking. Some wives might find it funny too.
First, Elly is not gossiping. She is not spreading a tale to anyone. She is asking her husband if she is correct about who she is seeing across a dimly lit restaurant. Then she is speculating about why he may be there. If she went home and told Connie and Anne about it, that would be gossip.
Second, several of the writers here are correct. Men are hard-wired to look. Melarama, the quote from Matthew is not relevant. He is not “lusting after her”, he is looking. There’s a big difference, and if we women don’t understand that, then we have an insecurity problem. Over years there were several strips where John looked at attractive young women and Elly always “caught” him doing so.
Third, John’s mistake here is not thinking before he makes a comment. He should know Elly well enough by now to know how she would react to a comment like that, plus he should remember he’s with Elly, not Ted.
True story? Poor Lynn! Most men at least have the decency to leer discretely and have the brains to say, “I don’t know what’s up with Fred – June is such a wonderful woman! And as far as I’m concerned, that woman isn’t even very attractive. She doesn’t hold a candle to you.” Or something to that effect. Sadly, it appears El’s husband – and Lynn’s – couldn’t help opening their mouths and proving what fools they really are.
MYOB often works one way when you are a new-comer to a town.I once asked someone about somebody else. Not only did he not tell me anything, but that night “else” was on the phone chewing me out for snooping! But yet, one morning when I went to work, every second person was asking me “Who was that lady you were seen with last evening?”(The lady was my Niece from the Coast paying a one-day visit!)
I guess I’m as dense as John. I didn’t think what he said was so awful. So Fred is spending the evening with a babe, so what. That’s Fred’s business. Ellie could easily roll with it and let it be. I thought it was funny and that’s what a cartoon strip is supposed to be.
Oddly enough, my wife usually notices first. Or at least says something first. But, then, she’s also the one who usually says, “Just because I’m not ordering doesn’t mean I can’t look at the menu.”
I used to have a lady co-worker who said of her husband, “I don’t care where he gets his appetite as long as he comes home for supper”. She understood that a man can become excited by what he sees, but what counts is that she is the woman for him. She was rather young, but she was an emotionally mature and happy woman. Elly needs to understand that looking is only enjoying the scenery and means nothing important to the man that loves HER.
I think you all missed the point. The point is John was so busy eyeballing the Pretty lady that he was not even listening to Elly anymore. His whole attention is on the lady and he is not even seeing the guy she is with. Just checking out the other lady’s body. That is why it is disrespectful to Elly.

If it was just thought balloons, he’d be alright, but to blurt it out aloud is pretty dumb on John’s part.

It’s not what you say so much but how you say it. Ellie is worrying about her friends’ marriage; John’s reaction is to make her worry about her own.
