Boy, for someone who’s boss has been kidnapped & is in a life & death situation where every minute counts Goodwin is sure taking his time getting to the pertinent information.
Message must have been urgent since it was sent via Western Union. Tomorrow, I’ll find out how important and did Wolfe interrupt his dinner while telling Archie and the butlet to stay put.
Western Union sold it’s message service to iTelegram in 2006. You can still send traditional telegrams to about 150 countries including the U.S. A First Class Priority Telegram goes for $34 + 0.75 per word. Usually within 24 hours. I guess the sender or Nero don’t have email or phones.
Time to bombard THE NEW YORK DAILY NEWS to put Tracy back on t heir comics page.DIck was their bread and butter for over 50 years.DILBERT has kindly created a vacancy.
Nero Wolfe, canonically, weighs less than 300lbs (21 1/2 stone). In one book, I can’t recall which, Archie is talking about Wolfe’s custom built chair which was built to handle up to a seventh of a ton, or about 285lbs (630,000 carets). He then adds something to the effect of “which was not outside of the realms of possibility if Wolfe kept eating as he did”. On this tenuous evidence I propose that the concept of “enormously fat” has changed somewhat over the years.
We, too, Archie, are eager to hear what the telegram said [telegrams being high-end period technology for the story’s setting]! What could so startle Nero Wolfe?
Nice narration and art make today’s strip a positive pleasure….
he startled by the fact that his main food supplier is in danger of closing it’s doors the very next day and he’s not able to act fast enough to put a lock on whatever foodstuff stock supply he can get his hands on for a discount…

the look on Nero’s face is the result of realizing that his meal has been interrupted, along with the message…

Good morning™, everyone!
Nero Wolfe actually got up and made his way to the door. Whatever the telegram says, he seems quite shocked by it.

What could be so important as to take precedence over a fine and finely prepared repast ? ?
