According to the description of Little Orphan Annie, volume 7, “Harold Gray is at the top of his game as he also presents the frightening villain Boris Sirob, who actually kills both “Daddy” Warbucks and The Asp.”
Good morning™, Confusing Palindromes ! Not sure if this couple, Annie’s birth parents, is a good guy or bad guy ?.
If Charles drew this scene the way Frank King (who lived at the time) would, it would be really compelling and pull your mindset into how it must have been to be there yourself.
Daddy Warbucks usually travels with his associate and bodyguard Punjab and “The Asp”. Hopefully Punjab is in close proximity to Mr. Warbucks and prevents his kidnapping. Punjab has mystical abilities to sense danger, thus should be on high alert to danger. Noted the comments of Neil Wicks – I hope this possible scenario does not play out including ’The Asp" being killed.
I never cared about LOA with this filthy rich daddy who made money from the war ( what else would Warbucks mean?). I don’t know if Gould liked LOA or not but certainly wouldn’t have included characters like Punjab and Asp in his strip (prior to the Moon Period that is)
Read this article and then tell me that the character of Annie hasn’t been overly simplified and diminished as she appears today. Tell me the moody melodrama is the same. Read enough and you will come to the conclusion that very little of the original still exists. It is what happens when separate universes have to be pretzel-twisted in order to mash-up together. Something has to go. Usually is is everything—including Harold Gray’s vision.
Monday – Dick Tracy has phone message to see Oliver Warbucks.
Tuesday – Cameo reference to Wash Tubbs comic strip.
Wednesday – Tracy, Annie, & I all wonder what the point of this is.
Thursday – After days? weeks? months? years? Oliver has decided it is time to show pictures of Annie’s parents to her. I whine about lack of any logic to asking Tracy, the head of the MCU, to be there.
Friday – (apparent flashback to whatever year 1919 has become in the retro-continuity. Miss Asthma is mourning/celebrating (we can’t be sure which) the orphan shortage. And I know the strip began in 1924, but Annie was not a baby when the strip began so I’m taking it back a couple years earlier… Assuming this is a flashback.)
Saturday – (the apparent flashback continues. Are these Annie’s parents and baby Annie before the parents die/disappear? Again, assuming a flashback – nothing has been explicitly stated.)
Am I missing some segue that would tie this all together better than it appears to me?
I am loving this! The drawing seems fresh and grabs you, after all the dark, albeit traditional, DT art. And also the story line is hysterical; I think Mike has a wonderful sense of humor!
Good morning, devoted DT readers! Artist note: today and next Sunday are going to confuse the hell out of you and I take partial responsibility for it. Due to a miscommunication in script, There is no baby yet! I mean, there is a baby just not supposed to OUTSIDE the mother. The dialog stays the same. The art was corrected but not in enough time to resubmit. That plot point will correct itself when the time comes, I’m just giving you a head’s up. Everything else is on track.
On another note, I want to engage with y’all but wow, the vitriol from a couple of folks. I know I have a bit to go and I feel it’s getting better but “less than stellar” and “sub par” is not constructive. This seems more about them than me and I’m not going to take it personally, it’s just unnecessary. I came into it hoping to bring new life to the strip and try to do right by you guys. All I can do is my best.
I’m guessing that’s the Orphan family in a flashback. 1 - Readers shouldn’t have to guess if it’s a flashback or not. Usually there’s too much exposition! 2 - Mike is writing for a very select audience here – someone who 50+ years ago, read and can still remember LOA (and cares).
1-JOE ORPHAN: DAM THIS DEPRESSION! You’d think the government would have it fixed by 1939!
2-BETTY ORPHAN: I think we should give up on this country and move to Germany. The economy over there is going great and we obviously have great Aryan looks!
3-JOE: I know but I just accepted a job spying for the Fatherland. If the check don’t bounce, we won’t have to move and I’ll be making good money. ANNIE ORPHAN: hi…hi… HEIL!!!

Does Boris have an accomplice named Natasha? Is this a cross-over story with Rocky & Bullwinkle?

6 days and 18 panels in (which isn’t enough time to fully judge), the artwork looks fantastic and I’m looking forward to the story playing out.

Hm. I still don’t know which parent Annie got her eyes from.

March 18, 2023: Flattop begins his flashback appearance in the DT Nero Wolfe crossover.
March 2, 2024: A very little child – apparently a soon-to-be-orphaned Annie – begins a flashback sequence in her own DT crossover.
Who will it be in March 2025?

Boris Sirob was introduced in the same story as Mr.Am——and he -pre-dated Axel.
Mr.Am turned him into a monkey(no,he really did) and that was supposed to be the end of him.
