An interesting point of fact; the active “popularist” republicans have moves so far to the right that they think (and I use that term loosely) that staunch, long term conservatives are far left.

“Moderate Republican”? Aren’t they on the endangered species list, if not already completely extinct?

I had no idea. I’ve been genuinely confused with the repeats lately where Mike was supporting Republicans. I’ve been trying to guess Trudeaus criticism.

Mr. Trump is not a conservative as that term was defined when I came of age. He is a Nazi. He is our version of AH. Nothing more, nothing less.

Republicans no longer want to live in a democracy.

They want to live in a country where the Right People are in power.

And where Those People have no power whatsoever.

How do #neoBolsheviks feel about peaceful democracy in a republic?

Their #fake_GOP is against it.

A failed practice insurrection “led” by cowards and losers is still an #insurrection.

Moderate = moderate conservative i.e. not a reactionary. But considering what a moral dumpster fire the US is now and has been for decades, that’s little better.

How did we know they’d bust things up?

Meanwhile in NC, gerrymandering/voter suppression is raging as it has for years, dividing cities to dilute the Democrat vote. Then in a loud voice, create a distraction by accusing Democrats of voter fraud. We need good Republicans to stand up and say NO. But they are silent.

So how about a collection of lefties? Who’s going to represent the really far left?

Not sure I buy the idea that Republicans were pro-democracy before Trump. I think they’ve been going in the authoritarian direction for decades before that. People like Mike were just deluded that it was otherwise.

We have another bellwether coming up in 2022 in GA to determine if we are getting through to enough people to end the anti-democracy movement. There’s a good chance that the Governor’s race will be Abrams v Perdue (primarying Kemp with The Fat Orange Clown’s endorsement).

The first group will be the moderate GOP who will have to bite the bullet for their party’s future. The other group contains the POC and lower class who always take Dem energy, time and money trying to get them to come out to vote despite the voter suppression laws to stop them.

What about Duke?

Voter fraud (defrauding the voters) won Florida for Bush in 2000. All the rest is the Decline and Fall of “the last best hope of Mankind”.

I’m idly wondering lately if armed conflict with Russia over Ukraine would bring the “anti-Commies” back into t he government fold, so to speak. I also confess that I think Putin is currently our most dangerous enemy.

The most vocal, the most outraged anti-Trumpers ought to be members of the Republican Party. And the leaders of the party who just go along with Trump need to be ousted.

I have said many times before, and I will reiterate: The Republican Party Is Dead! They sold their souls to greed and promise of unlimited power by following a huckster! For allowing themselves to be led by a socio-psychopath, a narcissistic con-man, they have surfeited what little intelligence and integrity they once had.

Anyone still calling themselves a Moderate Republican is delusional! If you oppose Trump then you’re no longer – according to his minions – a Republican. If you are a follower of Trump then you are a Trumpist not a Republican!

Phil and Jim were both horrible, HORRIBLE people who I sincerely doubt care about living in a dictatorship or not, as long as they keep their fortunes and don’t have to pay taxes.

I’d find it easier to believe they’re against voter suppression if they DID something to fight it instead of staying silent. Because right now it just looks like lip service because they benefit from it.

I have been reading history professor Dr. Heather Cox Richardson’s ‘Letters from an American’ daily posts on Facebook for two+ years now (there are other ways to read them as well if you don’t do FB). She teaches at Boston U., writes about things that have happened in the past day or so and how it ties into our country’s history, in a very clear and concise way. I have learned a lot from her and envy those who get to take her classes. Sometimes her posts can be unsettling (she does not pull punches on what a perilous time this is for democracy in the United States) but she also writes with an optimism that all is not lost. I highly recommend what she writes. A good, thoughtful read usually takes about five minutes a day.

I once met Trudeau at a book signing. I asked him what would surprise “Doonesbury” readers the most to learn about “Doonesbury.” He replied that there were always lots of Republicans in Congress who asked him to send them the original art of strips that featured them. And, of course, William F. Buckley wrote the forward to “Doonesbury’s Greatest Hits”. That WAS way back in 1978, of course…..I, personally, didn’t have the Republican Party leave me until later—but before Traitor Trump, of course.

Trump was a Democrat. He has co-opted the GOP for his own, very selfish ends – primarily the making of money, self-aggrandizement, and the avoidance of paying bills. It is easy to foresee a scenario where conservatives have to form another party just to dump Trump and his clueless sycophants. He has literally turned against everyone he has formerly praised. What makes you so special that it wouldn’t be you next?

Where’s Duke? If anyone was right-wing then it was him surely! If Lacey and Dick Davenport are worth remembering then Duke should be at the centre of things!

Today’s Republican Party is not conservative. They are classical radical right-wing reactionaries. They want to turn the clock back to the 1950’s…or ever the 1850’s. You know; the Good Old Days.

If that is all true, why hasn’t Trudeau address Waukesha? As with most of the press, even Fox, they won’t touch that racist hate crime that killed 6 people including a child. And they don’t address why cities aren’t burning over it.

Today’s “moderate” republicans have all joined the Democratic Party by now. There aren’t any more left (pun intended)

Again, we are presented with the odd implication that Trff (who, in the Doonesbury universe, is just as “real” a person as is Trump), a [fictional] former despot and “ethnic cleanser” who is responsible for the deaths of hundreds of thousands of his own people, is somehow “less evil” than Trump, who’s…well, c’mon, he’s not DIRECTLY responsible for the deaths of hundreds of thousands of his own people, anyway. Still, as ever, just a comic strip, I should really just relax.

I consider myself a moderate conservative. My biggest regret is supporting Trump in 2016. The damage he has done is immeasurable.

I am not sure people commenting are really seeing the comic above. Not ALL Republicans were for Trump nor do they go along with what this new wave is doing to their party. There are Republicans that voted for Clinton and Biden. There are Democrats who voted for Trump once or even both times. Not all Republicans are alike just like not all Democrats are. There are Republicans that are pro choice, not racist, are for helping the poor, etc. There are Democrats that are pro life, racist, not for helping the poor, etc. etc. Some people have one thing they hold dear that they will go with one party for and hate all the other stuff. To keep saying “Republicans this and Republicans that”, is not right. I believe there is another party here and they are the Trump followers. They are not Republicans, they hijacked that name and hide behind it. Just like some terrorists like to hijack religions and hide behind them. Please, this is just making things worse. Reread the comic and get it’s meaning. Please.

Mike started out as the butt of the joke. He called himself a conservative very early on, remarking on how interesting it was that he could be friends with the very liberal Mark. His first success came from selling out his talents to create Mr. Butts. Over the years, he has grown up a lot. Maybe the next step he’ll take will be finally putting the GQP behind him.
