This is why I prefer digital portal technology and not analog scribble portals. Digital portals tend to have nice, well defined event horizons, while analog is all “goopy”.
Give it up for Duffy for being a quick thinker on grabbing that metaphysical gate tablet before it sinks into the soft floor. Interesting how the floor has gotten a mushy, almost semi-liquid state, like sand in a state of liquifaction during an earthquake.
I think Wally and Duffy and going to be pulled into whatever portal Alan is sinking into. No way they’re going to be able to pull him out; he’s simply too heavy. Quick-thinking of Duffy to grab the portal device gadget. Alan apparently dropped the blaster gun when he started sinking through the floor. Can’t blame him for that; he has other things on his mind besides holding onto a weapon.
In the fourth panel, is Dr. Amesworth trying to climb out, or is she reaching for the blaster gun? If the latter, our anthro friends are better off letting the portal take them somewhere else to avoid being shot or torn apart by the toothbrushes. (Which are still busily destroying the tower outside while all this excitement is going on.)
The lab on the other side of one of the portals will try to get a location or connection to Ameworth to bring her back. Will they lock onto the device Duffy has just picked up (which makes more sense), or lock onto her suit (which has all kinds of electronics and communications gear)? I think they will making contact soon.
So the activated “rings” are areas where the floor is mush, and the dark ones seem to be solid. Maybe there is some kind of path thru the lighted areas? (Some “paths” give the appearance of passing over/under one another. ) Reality is quicksand, and they’re sinking in the quagmire. Forget the horses, they’re going to need a dozer.
Remember back at Ravenscroft’s place Wally had that absorbing feeling when he touch that wall. I think Amesworth is reaching for that little light colored item just to the left with some sort of markings….a button perhaps. Her place and this place are connected….they activated their side….she’s got to do something here to lock signals….otherwise it’s off to the random reality free for all. The Free Energy story ended with a bot in a void saying….Dang. This could end up with Amesworth in a Topsider suit standing in a void spewing out more than Dang!xD
Wait a sec, I just noticed something: Duffy is reaching for the navigator, and in the third panel, he managed to somehow get himself out of the interdimensional quicksand.
The roof is still falling. There’s no button in front of her, just a piece of ceiling. Amesworth is trying to lever herself out of the active part of the gate onto the inactive part (lines not illuminated).
Where Wally is standing (and presumably Duffy when he arrives) is mostly not illuminated. But Alan is in the active part. Since Alan probably has not place upon which to stand, he must rely on Wally & Duffy to get him out. But they have made progress. He was in fairly deep, but now you can see his tail. As long as no one gets hit by a big chunk of ceiling, they should be out of the active gates.
But they do need to leave and soon — and all together.

Alan: “Wow, this place is a real drag! LOL get it? ‘Drag’? ‘Cause it’s dragging us into—”
Wally: “We get it!”

OK. I’m really confused. Is this the portal opening up or is the place just REALLY coming UNGLUED and swallowing them?

Wow, I think she’s wanting to draw another mark or two—tweak the design! See her reaching for that rock?

You can FEEL the action happening here, which is one of the reasons Endtown remains such a fantastic strip.
It was the same way when Ted/Jim was attacking Chic. Edge-of-seat stuff, here, which so many can’t accomplish.

From this angle, "Dr. Answoth " seems to resemble a dolphin with arms. I wonder if she has gone “andro” but is hiding it in her biosuit.

Let’s see. Two varieties of pussycat pulling an ELEPHANT out of a hole. No problem.

Imagine a full sized elephant cardoodle suddenly dropping into your reality. In your living room.

Dang! If only I had the willpower and discipline to stop reading this strip daily, and then binge read it months at a time.

The portal map reminds me of when a not so funny co-worker likes to take all the paperclips out of the box and hook them all together.

What, you couldn’t use dittos to pick up an elephant?

Try 12 years, I’ve been binging for about 3 weeks now, still 1.5 years to go, maybe finish and caught up next week?
