Delivery anyone? Since you’re both shot, why not have someone else do the cooking for you for once?

I like the way Elly tries to one-up John on who had the worst day and fails hard. It sounds like Elly normally gets off work early enough to go grocery shopping and then pick up April at the Pre-K at what? About 3 pm? Most bookstores do not open until 10 am, so what does Elly work? 10 am – 2 pm. On this particular day, Elly had to work right up until the time she picks up April, so what is that — a 5-hour workday instead of a 4-hour workday? I declare John with winner with his 3 emergencies, destroyed computers and smoke alarms. Maybe “winner” is not the right term there.

When I was around 16 I volunteered to cook dinner every weeknight for my family (me, parents, and brother), in exchange for horseback riding lessons. I enjoyed cooking (still do at age 80) and was good at it (still am), and loved horses (still do). My parents both worked, often late, and loved coming home to a hot meal. It was win-win all the way around!

A high school freshman volunteering to make dinner because their parents had a rough day… Wow. This comic was definitely drawn before Gen-Z.

When I was that age, starting dinner on week nights was part of my regular share of the chores. Mom would plan out the week and I’d help shop too. It worked out well. I would do prep around starting homework. Any dishes to be baked would be ready to go into the oven when Mom got home. Younger sibs would help after with cleanup. Nowadays Hubs likes to cook so he does that part and I am the cleanup crew. Works out great.

John seems remarkably calm after having his entire way of making a living go Kablooey on him. Unless he had every single, solitary, computer thing backed up or in the cloud, he has lost a wealth of information today. If John’s practice is in a stand-alone building, when the smoke alarm went off, did any of the fire depressant discharge? That can be a real mess to clean up. An electrical fire is nothing to mess with. He’ll need an electrician to come in to not only correct the issue, but it would be a good idea to inspect all the wiring to ensure this doesn’t happen again. Then he’ll need to clean up and sanitize the place before opening. All of this doesn’t get done in a day, and he’ll be without income until he re-opens. Elly doesn’t seem to give one stitch about John’s problem though, as she is in a hurry to share hers.
