Horrible enough to be creepypasta material.

I’m surprised that Charlotte hasn’t already gotten into Algebra on her own.

It could be as easy as:

    2 + x = 4. Solve for x.

    Congratulations: you now know algebra!

(Except x doesn’t mean multiply. That is now represented by a dot or no symbol at all. See? Simple.)

    I am officially sad.

Kids being reluctant about school is a beaten to death trope.

Why, oh why couldn’t Charlotte be a different, dare I say it, original character and be a kid who has fun being smart, hasn’t met a challenge she doesn’t like yet, and her dirty little secret is that the start of school is just a half step behind the start of summer vacation as her favorite day of the year?

The horror comes when they introduce the numbers with the chainsaw and hockey mask.

Mathematics is the only discipline in which you can prove, to the satisfaction of yourself and your peers, that a thing does not and cannot exist, and then continue studying the thing in detail for several centuries without being considered insane.

According to Walt Kelly’s Pogo character Albert the Alligator, algebra was invented by a zebra named Al. Al Zebra. Pogo says “Algebra doesn’t have a Z in it!” And Albert says, “Algebra’s got nothin’ but z’s and x’s and stuff in it!”

This was when math finally became interesting! And it only got better (as long as you avoid statistics)!

If Charlotte has a logical mind, algebra and geometry should be a snap for her. I was killing math until I hit calculus; I just couldn’t wrap my mind around it. So good luck to her there.

As a math major in college, we sometimes went an entire semester without ever encountering an actual number.

Algebra, geometry, calculus, trig. My brain melted and never recovered. Thank Newton for calculators and computers.
