Gunther: "Rosa, I meant to ask, how'd your parents react to all this?" Rosa: "You mean when I said "Forget my hard-earned slot at Yale. I'm off to uncle Leo's clinic"? They were thrilled" Rosa: "My dad threatened to cancel my ticket" Gunther: "I could be going to Peru by myself?!" Quill: "Great. I loaded Rosa's bags and everything"

Never thought of That angle! (re. your note of yesterday…I guess we’re just going to have to agree to disagree!) It is a shock when our chicks fledge the nest…takes quite some time to get used to them not being at home…a lot of time in my case! But, then, I didn’t have all that much time to get over his HS graduation, not to mention his going in the Navy! The first time your son comes “home,” he will be changed in some ways…and the same in others. Its an exciting journey to share in their futures! ;)

Well, I got tired of cold cereal a long time ago, but I can’t imagine ever getting tired of coffee. It’s kind of my little slice of heaven; that, along with my precious baby cockapoo, flowers (especially my roses), and JSBach.

Even if she couldn’t go to Peru right now, I don’t think she’d be “resigned” to taking up learning at Yale. – Which is probably why they let her go (with reservations) [pardon the pun, please]…

We can only hope. At this point, I seriously have my doubts. But maybe this is Evans’ way of turning Gunther into a man. I can imagine him returning all suave and sophisticated, speaking Spanish, Quechuan, and Aymara fluently, and unafraid and ready to meet any challenge head on.

Don’t know anything about airline policies, but if Rosa’s ticket is cancelled, maybe Gunther could do the same and use the money to elope to Vegas. Whatever, this whole thing has to be a prelude to sex.

“My favorite flavor is almond extract. It tastes great in sugar cookies…”
Oh, totally agreed. Almond flavoring is a favorite for me too. Mmm, yes, I’ll have to try it in pancakes. What topping do you use for almond pancakes? Would maple syrup drown out the flavor?

Rosa’s diplomat-Dad may have threatened to cancel her ticket, but so far he has not done so (or else she wouldn’t be in the car on her way to the airport—just eight more miles). Either she and Gunther do fly off to Tio Leo, or both stay in Pitts and the whole Peru adventure collapses. Whatever the case, Rosa and Gunther stick together. That’s my take on this developing scene. I’d like to see them in Lima, but if they have to stay in Pitts for the summer, and if Rosa is forced off to Yale in the fall, at least she and Gunther will remain in touch, in a long-distance romance (unless he too manages to get into Yale somehow at the last minute).

Angelalex242 over 10 years ago
Not every 18 year old is financially dependent on mom and dad in today’s America. In many cases, Mom and Dad don’t have anything to be dependent on, assuming there even IS a dad.
So, most such financial dependence is actually dependence upon the US government, which has a welfare system in place for just such an occurrence, and an easily abuseable one too.
Most egregious is the ‘have lots of kids’ plan some girls are on. This dastardly plan involves having one (But no more then one) child per boyfriend. She then gets child support from the dude, and money from the government. If she has 5 kids by 5 dudes, she then has 5 streams of child support income and yet more money from the government, and essentially makes more money as a baby making machine then she’d make at any minimum wage jobs and most service jobs of any kind. It takes a cold, efficient heart to run that play, but it gets run, frequently. All it takes is a maneater’s heart and a massive sense of entitlement. Both of which are largely evident in today’s America.

While we Americans are stuck in our self-absorbed, self-centered, and just plain lazy apathy regarding other languages and cultures (Disclaimer: I speak 18 languages, about half of them fluently, so I may be a bit biased on this subject!).

Why would Rosa’s parents pay for the ticket if they are so against her plans? She must be over 18. How could they cancel her ticket unless they paid for it??

Anyone wonder where Luann is? I thought she would have been there to see Gunther off, if only to spend the drive to the airport with Quill …
slsharris over 10 years ago
In some cases where opportunities like this arise, some colleges will defer entrance until the next year’s class. I’m not sure that Yale would do this, but hey, it bears looking into…
TORAD_07 over 10 years ago
well, you’d kinda suspect Quill would have kept Luann informed
To be perfectly honest, I don’t even know where Lu and Q stand anymore. Since the prom and graduation, I don’t even think they’ve exchanged more than 1-2 words of dialogue. I wonder if this is part of the setup for Lu and Q to go their separate ways for now…. and for Lu to meet new boys at Pitts CC… and Tiff to try and have another go at Q (doubtful, since it would not involve competing against Lu)… I hope Greg will sort all this out over the summer, but we’ll see.

Dang…forgot how the hyphens would cause the strikeout effect
And “asterisks” will make it bold. And “underscores” will make it italic.
This should, actually, be in the FAQ, if it isn’t

I feel like I’m commenting on a puppet show, because Greg Evans is pulling the strings. But he does set the stage and has some purpose in mind, so I think that, given the situation, Gunther and Rosa have bonded, and are on their own, and they should feel the freedom and excitement and passion. If Gunther doesn’t, he has a real problem, and I don’t see Greg’s purpose for this whole build up.

I don’t understand how Rosa was smart enough to get accepted to Yale, but didn’t think to have her matriculation postponed. This would have ensured that she would still have her spot at Yale after going to Peru.
Here is Yale’s deferred enrollment policy:

Has Quill ever lived in a non Anglophone country? I think not. Otherwise, he would understand the gravitas of the situation for Gunther— who may not speak a word of Spanish yet!

Re: teas…Bigelow’s Lemon Lift in the morning, then their Green Tea, then Tetley’s round British Blend, then Bigelow’s English Teatime. Sometimes I have Lipton’s regular tea, but I do prefer their Family-Sized Ice Tea Blend. In this hot weather, I make at least 3 qts. of it and it lasts about 2 days, maybe. Twining’s English Breakfast and Irtish Breakfast are also good. Don’t know What I’d do without my tea! I used to like sugar in my iced tea but quit doing that a long time ago…although “sweet tea” is a Southern staple… ;)
ORMouseworks over 10 years ago
Yes, “Southern” does have different dialects! Don’t forget “Brooklynese” and “New Jerseyian.” There’s also “Coloradoan” and “Kansasian.” The Left Coast is something else in the language department! There’s also quite a few language-mxing going on in Arizona, especially in Phoenix and Tucson… Oh, can’t forget the “Queen’s” English in addition to Scots English and Irish English (don’t know about Wales). No wonder it is so difficult for non-native speakers to learn “English!” =-O

Its about some dogs from outer-space who are trying to get Earth-dogs to see how dogs Really do control the universe…I don’t remember the name of the movie,.. of course (I leave that up to my hub who can remember hundreds of movies, their plots, the actors, the dialogue! I “sort of” can identify the “Star Wars” characters and their stories…maybe!) ;)
