So they left him in the roof to go eat? Time for some Otis Redding. “Sitting on the top of my roof, watching time pass b….”
And Greg first showed a Gulag with a pitched gable end. Now he’s got an angled flat roof. Also what is that window doing over the front door? Nothing in any interior shot has hinted at a cathedral ceiling. So it hints at a second floor that we’ve never seen or a loft area, that again has never been hinted at. Greg is a great artist but as an architect he leaves much to improve on.
Uh…ha ha? They can’t be going with this. “I thought Leslie was coming with you?” “No, Momther, he’s not. He’s stuck on our roof with the cat. Give me food.” “Yes, Irma, give food! Me hungee!”
Surely we missed the scene where the other two men were explaining how they were going to get a longer ladder? Or is this story line a piece of something we would find in Punk’s litter box?
Two thoughts. Les’ reasoning in panel #2 might also apply to kids getting married too young. And, after looking at today’s 9 Chickweed Lane, I can be thankful that Shannon is not twins. Note: After reading all the comments, I like Trilogy’s idea of a pillow case for Punk. Lower him down and let monkey man go back the way he came up.
Of course, if the roof is high enough, Punk could have jumped off and landed safely on all fours. For a one-story height, I would think Les could make the drop safely, if he hangs off the eaves.
They (Al and Gunther) left to get help/ladder, “folks.” I’d bet my Roland D-50 on it.
No way Gunther would leave that poor kitten up there. Al on the other hand…..m
This story does illustrate the danger of not having a viable plan and not thinking things through.
Consider. What if this arc had started with Les being home alone he heard the “meow” and he scrambled up that drainpipe to get the cat only to realize (as he doing today) that he as no idea on how to get down? And no one around who’s aware of his plight? Or worse, what if he’d slipped and fell off that drain pipe and critically injured himself with no one around? Someone said “what about Les’ phone?” Sure, if he had it on him. And if he’s got it? Why isn’t he using it now?
Like I said the other day, this has shaped up to be a “tug at your heartstrings” holiday cat story. And I’ll even reluctantly give Mr. Knox his props. There were two times this year where I grudging said “good show” to Les. Today, and last Spring when Les refused to tell Luann what (if anything) he about Gunny and Bets “doing it.” The guy thought with his heart and not with head this week to “save” a kitten. Admirable, but potentially dangerous.
And to what end? I think Les being “prepped” for his first girlfriend. Maybe it’s someone We know, though I hope not. I think (I hope) it be someone brand new. Maybe gal that doesn’t care for cats and Les has to choose. Guess We’ll soon see. ;)
Les could put Punk in his shirt and climb down the way he came up. Of course, Punk will probably go wild in Les’ shirt and scratch the heck out of him. Later, to get even with Gunther for leaving with Al to go have Thanksgiving dinner, Les could tell Gunther how well he and Bets were getting along in the kitchen a few weeks ago when they were making soup, then show Gunther his scratched – up man boobs and say that Bets did it just before she left while Gunther was studying. Then tell Gunther that if he wants, he could talk Bets into scratching up his, too. Those crazy guys in the Gulag will end up having so much in common.
The philosophical realization about himself on the roof with the cat in his arms. So poetic… Could this be a turning point in Les’s life? Cats are certainly capable of making humans feel stupid. Sometimes they look at you with that judgmental look…. But in defense of Les, he was so worried about Punk that he stopped thinking.
Please don’t tell me they are going to just leave him there, especially after his heroic (if not well thought out) act. Nomatter what a jerk he has been in the past, and no wonder given the obvious lack of love ever shown him by family, his love for this kitty redeems him in my view. Roles are now reversed as it’s Gunther etc. who are the creeps here.
What does Greg and/or Karen have against Thanksgiving Day? Over the years the day’s strip has been filled with strife and/or bad feelings.
I had to go back eleven years to 2009 to find a Luann strip even showing a Thanksgiving Day dinner and even that was at a time of strife when Nancy didn’t accept Toni as wife material for Brad!
2010, Toni confronts Dirk. 2011, Brad was laid off; TJ tells Toni to tell the Captain she’ll quit if Brad not rehired. 2012, Quill returned to Oz, Luann pines for him. 2013, Luann and parents leave for visit to Aunt, Luann is not pleased. 2014, Gunther pines for home from Peru. 2015, Bernice warns Luann that Pru is after Quill. 2016, Brad and Toni fight wildfires while family stresses over wedding day preparations. 2017, Luann and Bernice argue over Bern not being Luann’s “bestie.” 2018, Tiffany and Ann confront one another at the Fuse. 2019, Tiffany declines to attend and sits alone in her dorm after her father invites Ann to their Father-Daughter dinner.
This reminds me of the time when Les Moore in “Funky Winkerbean” got stuck on the climbing rope in the gym because he couldn’t figure out how to get down… They ended up playing a whole basketball game that evening with him still stuck up there..
Cute. You do get a different prospective sitting on the roof. And, apparently in this case, find out who your friends are or aren’t! Cue the Drifters:Right smack dab in the middle of town,I’ve found a paradise that’s trouble proof (up on the roof)And if this world starts getting you downThere’s room enough for twoUp on the roof (up on the roof) ;-)
I just had to mention, how CUTE Punk is! And, take a close look at Panel 2. His ears are no longer straight up (confident. happy). They’re drooping, and his head is turned downwards. He KNOWS he was a bad boy, and he’s thinking, “Thanks for saving me, Daddy, but HOW are we going to get down? I can smell the turkey from here and I want my share!”
I’m sure it’s just a matter of perspective that makes “the gulag” (as some call it) seem taller than the average single story house. Leslie got up; he can get down, though he may destroy the downspout in the process…..
I didn’t comment earlier but I will now; the bad part about this is that “great” Uncle Al and “great” Gunther didn’t even get a ladder for him to come down or found a way to help him down. They went to have dinner.
