That is why educators are needed, Luann. You know, the kind of people Tara accused you of being. They are there to keep you from having to have a career as a sign twirler. That’s reality.
Bernice is trying to work her magic, but she’s bringing a lot of salagadoola to the party and Luann needs some bibbidi-bobbidi-boo.
Hey, I know! Lu could probably get some great advice from Dez’s “destiny deck.” (On the other hand, she might not make any sense of it in time for it to be useful).
Feel like this might be a set-up to seeing more Jack. Like, he has a dog and wants to be a vet, he’d probably love to work at a kennel. At least I hope so because Jack’s a cool dude and I feel like we haven’t gotten to see him in awhile.
She could sell plasma once a week (twice a week if her veins could take it). When I worked at a plasmaphoresis center here in the college town, most of our donors were college students. Which was great, since I did the initial interviews and physical exams—they were all so healthy and normal and easy to work with. First time I ever saw tonsils, too. When I worked in the hospitals, none of my patients were college age, and none of them had tonsils.
Now, as I mentioned above, depending on the sign one “twirls”, they can make good money. A traffic flagger at road construction sites for example:
.
“The salaries of Traffic Control Flaggers in the US range from $66,780 to $172,590 , with a median salary of $122,950 . The middle 60% of Traffic Control Flaggers makes $122,950, with the top 80% making $172,590.”
.
Not too shabby. College education requirement: Just a B.S. (Bachelor of Signs)
Go with the cut in hours and concentrate on being a college student. You know the job and you could work your way back into the good graces of a new principle. Downgrade your expenses for awhile because you still have the security of living at home. Take your time, impulsive decisions could take you to a really bad place.
What newspaper is Bernice reading from the Pitts Pyciyunne from 1976? Because around here every store has “Now Hiring” signs. Luann could walk through the door and get anything from burger flipper to saleswoman. The idea that the only things that are available are Sign Twirler or Drug test victim is nonsense. Greg and Karen need to get out more. Maybe even talk to read kids Luann’s age.
Luann may need to realize that her new part-time job does not have to be a foot in the door to her future career. Perhaps just securing a nice stable job with 10-15 hours a week that is compatible with your class schedule and remaining hours at the kiddie care job is all that is needed right now. If you find that jolt of inspiration and find a “calling”; awesome but do not expect it to hit you like a bolt of lightning as minimum wage jobs (if Luann is in SoCal) are not always a doorway to the future but merely a means to survive as you find your real future.
So there is nothing wrong with simple working retail or hospitality to pay for the car insurance, textbooks and coin for the weekend. Anyhow, if Luann and the DeGroots were so strapped for cash then Luann could apply for and receive college work study (anywhere from 5 to 20 hours a week of employment on campus), loans (be careful Luann, they may take longer to pay off than you realize) or perhaps a Pell Grant. However this would not likely be a full benefit if the Degroots clear a set amount of income, it just depends on if the Fuse is in the red or not. Luann would still have to be a full dependent of Frank and Nancy which I am going to guess is a given.
I kinda hope that Bernice will apply to become a Medical study subject. It would help her to understand what it means to be on the other side, with others who judge and study you. I love how optimistic Luann is♡. I hope she will really find something great for her. That night shift at the kennel might be fine too. She may find out that Jack already works there. That would be really awesome♡!
As someone has already mentioned we have here a mixture of an optimistic outlook and reality. There’s got to be an acceptable compromise in there somewhere. But then again, as the great philosopher, Father Guido Sarducci once said, and I quote: “Vitum Est Laborum”, that is, “Life Is Work”. So, there ya have it.
Focus and goal. Not dreaming right now. It’s nice to think the next job you go for could open a new career path (showing us that Luann’s still not settled on a job) but the reality is you need an entry level job that limits the number of hours you work so you can continue with your studies; hello Weenie World! A fair share of the cast has done time there and who knows, maybe we’ll see that Ann Eiffle has a job there too.
Some of those clinical studies pay good money. I’ve been in a couple dozen of them. I’ve known people who do nothing but that. In Luann’s case, covid notwithstanding, sitting in a study room for a specified period would be a good opportunity to study. (Yes, I know not all of them call for sitting in a room; cool your jets. But some do. See above.)

Lots of interesting points yesterday about Luann. One of the most striking things to me from this storyline is that Luann isn’t just a terrible character, she’s a terrible character by the standards of the strip. Evans can do better.
Tiffany is the example I would point to. She’s not consistently well-written, but it’s through her that I’ve seen some glimmers of competent characterization that’s mostly congruous with the story’s intent. Take the recent plot with where she butted heads with Bets. Tiffany created a for-profit dining experience that wasn’t what Bets wanted. Tiffany believed she was in the right (I don’t agree with her rationale, but she did at least have a rationale). At first Tiffany stuck to her guns even after it caused a rift between her and Bets. But when she learned that Gunther and Bets had broken up right after the dinner and Bets was no longer even speaking to Gunther, she reconsidered how she wanted to approach the matter.
Tiffany is a self-centered person and often makes things about herself. So her immediate concern was that it was her dinner concept and attempts to push Gunther to choose sides that caused the break-up. This bothered her for two major reasons. One, the dining experience was something Tiffany took very seriously and she was mortified (somewhat superficially, perhaps) that her first venture as a businesswoman had such a catastrophic result. Two, Gunther is a close friend of Tiffany’s and she really didn’t want to make his life worse.
Tiffany took all this in and made a decision. It was no longer important to her whether she was in the right initially; she wanted to do what it took to fix the problem, both to assuage her self-centered guilt and because she believed it was the right thing to do.
Gosh, what day is it? Seems like a week of Sunday strips! Get out of the bedroom and start pounding the pavement, or driving around. In our area there are many “Help Wanted” signs with jobs starting at more than $15/hr.When do these two have classes? :-o
Night Shift at a kennel sounds like it might work for a student. I college I worked as a night watchman. All the warehouse cared about was that the rounds clock got punched once per hour (20minutes to make a round) I had the other 40 minutes to do homework.
I never had difficulty finding ways to make money when I was a kid. I started out selling home made pot holders, door to door, in the 1950s. My grandmother bought me the supplies, and I made literally hundreds of them on my loom. I sold them 2 for a quarter all over town. People gobbled them up.
I made comic books in the 6th grade and sold them to my classmates for 10¢ apiece. The teacher let me draw them in class as long as they were about the subject matter he was teaching. I still have one somewhere of my characters taking a trip to China, which we were studying at the time.
How about a pole dancer in a gentlemen’s club? Not with Jack – Bernice has first dibs.So Luann hates reality – wait until she drops a Shannon or two.or maybe, “Looooann…..you don’t have to put on the red light” (sung by Kermit the frog).
