Luann, you were sad when your parents wouldn’t let you have a horse, and part of their reason was because you lost your parakeet when you were six. You can make a story about that.
At this point I think I would withdraw from the class and seek a refund on the tuition. It’s been, what> a week. I thing student are allowed to withdraw from a class within the time frame. Let’s face it, being humiliated by Mrs. Horner all the time will not enable Luann to thrive in that class.
Maybe if these young authors had something to say, the idea would motivate them to churn out words like one of those tree chippers spraying out the ground up hunks of wood. Explore the obvious, like is Gunther really the love child of Art Garfunkel and Bernadette Peters?
Mrs Horner, the only one who can remain a lovely older lady even when she makes you the awkward center of a lecture! With her everything is always a lesson. Now I hope she’ll l explain to Luann a method to overcome her problem. It would be very useful and who knows, maybe by analyzing her current family situation with her, Luann will notice for the first time how much Bernice has intruded in her life.
What’s with all of Mrs. Horner’s passive-aggressive behavior aimed at Luann? And Luann should defend herself instead of just looking humiliated, she is (or her parents are) PAYING for this class. Mrs. Horner is working for her. This isn’t high school where the teacher has all the authority. A college student has every right to push back against an instructor if they think they’re out of line.
I don’t think teach is helping. In my many years of preaching, I had often had those days when I just couldn’t find the concept to expound on. But, now, thanks in part to years of trying, and the Revised Common Lectionary, the concepts come quite easily. Now, comes the quest for that one great illustration to nail home the message.
The nominal point or I should say, overarching point here, is Lu’s inability to write a romantic story, based on her personal shortcomings, insecurity, based on lack of success romantically. Isn’t it time for something to change with Lu? Oh, l think, Ms. Horner is doing exactly the right thing here, Luann’s biggest issue is simply unconscious inertia.
I can relate to Luann, back in the day (circa 1965) I was in college with no idea what I wanted to do for a living. After graduation I fell into it by accident. As a writer myself, I know one of the best the best cures for writer’s block is writing, even if the first few sentences are gibberish. Lack of focus, though, can be a problem.
The typical community college charges near $100 per credit hour for this “level of instruction”. This is our tax dollars at work and don’t forget the IRS is watching you on April 15th.
BTW, I don’t think the writers of this comic have been to school in a while. If Ms. DeGroot decides to file a complaint to the school of academic affairs for embarrassment then it will lead to a termination of Mrs. Horner and leave the school open for legal action.
“When we grew up and went to school there were certain teachers who would hurt the children any way they could. By pouring their derision upon anything we did and exposing every weakness, however carefully hidden by the kids”
Mrs Horner is starting to kind of creep me out! She seems to be a little too touchy, and is certainly taking unfair advantage of the previous friendship with Luann. It’s never any fun to be singled out as the teacher’s pet, espescially when the teacher seems to enjoy humiliating, and petting you.
I constantly say this to people who have “writer’s block.”
“Don’t try to overcome it. Just go over the stuff you wrote, do some editing, and by the time you get to the bottom, you’ll know what you want to do. Writing is pitching. It’s all about how you want to pitch to the hitter and what you want to do with him.”
“Writer’s block is when you sit down, feel ready to write, and then get up and make a pot of coffee. It ends when you can’t afford to buy any more coffee and have to write something to get the money to buy more coffee.” —-a garbled quote for Theodore Sturgeon, the Uncrowned King of Writer’s Block.
Luann could take the key words in any direction; she could compare her family and how everyone interacts (like a full functioning family) with what she knows about Tara’s e.g. how Stella was hunting Tara down at the Fuse with the intent of doing physical harm. She could recount that event which she witnessed; There are so many directions one could take those words. Besides, it’s not what she writes about but the ability to flesh it out in a compelling way. I’m not sure Luann is even a writer (i.e. one who writes regularly; one who wants to write) She’s too caught up in her own situations and mental distractions; she can’t set them aside long enough to even do what’s being asked.
I’ve been wondering that too. She seemed more successful teaching. I wonder if this whole writing thing is a misdirection to buy time. I used to think the endgame for the strip was for the characters to return as adults working for the high-school. Luann as a drama teacher, Bernice as a counselor, Gunther teaching science or computers and Delta as the Principal.
Making an example of a struggling student? I used to like Ms. Horner. “Writer’s LOCK, so find the key” Really? G&K must think they are so clever. Why must Luann always be the doof?
In the last 10 years, only 1 student (on average) per class has written anything with a pen an pencil. This is a writting class, were are the computers?

Wow! Mrs. Horner seems to enjoy embarrassing Luann in front of the class. That’s a little concerning.
I’m glad they continued this arc. I definitely want to know what’s in the Piro letter.
With Luann having so much difficulty figuring what to write.. I wonder if writing really is the right occupation for her?
