Italian, Archeology, Welding, and Pottery… Solved it! Luann is learning Italian for her Archeological dig to find ancient Roman Pottery, which she is going to show on a metal display case she Welds herself.
A “newb” refers to a beginner who is willing to learn, while a “noob” refers disparagingly to an inexperienced gamer who lacks the determination to learn. While I am not sure which meaning Tara intends, I feel that either definition works.
So, another year mapped out with willy nilly, unfocused ‘cool’ classes?
This is year two now, and you’ve just outlined year three.
That fourth year finally getting around to preparing to live life like an adult is going to be a real barn burner, I guess.
Or will year four be another rinse and repeat of being “full of potential”? Followed by days moping around the house between your part time job herding other peoples’ kids, wondering about the not-at-all-a-mystery of how so many of your contemporaries managed to be out there, launching their lives as adults.
Gunther very possibly working a six figure, or close to it, tech job.
Betts underway with a successful revised social media endeavor.
Tiffany possibly using her business education in her starter job, probably bootstrapped via her father’s connections. An opportunity she wisely used her school years actually preparing for.
Dez out in the world fighting her earth mother good fight. Getting her hands dirty with community projects, and traveling around the world acting not just locally, but globally.
Even Stef still following her precarious path (but at least a path) of being something between a trophy wife and a low rent “it girl”.
Will that ’quirky’ welding class you’ll probably quit half way through be paying big dividends for you?
Luann acts like a passenger in her own life. Maybe some time should be spent on developing her character instead of having her pretend she is doing something useful.
Ohmygosh. It’s th Shofar Model 21B Compound Diffraction Horn. One blow on that thing’ll take out a few windows. An that girl’s glasses in th second row..
This is why college is a scam except for STEM. Useless courses that buy you nothing but loan debt. Also, college doesn’t teach welding. Trade schools do.
I hope Luann actually takes those classes, the welding one would be Knute’s return in the strip while I can imagine Crystal being in the archeology class. It will be very interesting to see Luann do the pottery course, maybe Tara will join her in that. I wish her well for the Italian one, because Italian is beautiful but terribly difficult and full of rules that often don’t make sense, but if this leads to Luann taking trips to Italy, HOORAY! I love seeing how Luann and Tara look up to Mrs. Horner, I’m afraid she might die and leave a big void in both of them, expecially in Luann.
I hope Luann is paying for her own classes and books. Her parents could pay for classes that would help her get a good job, but not for classes that are basically hobbies. I don’t see her becoming a welder as a job.
About 45% of people in the LA region speak Spanish and for some reason she will take Italian? If she is thinking about becoming a teacher likely 50%+ of her students will have Spanish as a first language. I would be surprised if to take a welding class did not require you to be enrolled in welding certification program.
Some articles attribute the invention of the ocarina to an Italian, Giuseppe Donati. But I have a couple handmade clay instruments in animal and Incan shapes with different number of holes that I’ve collected in Mexico and Guatemala. As far as Luann’s various elective classes, sounds like “Jack of all trades, master of none”. HOWEVER, all of those interests, Italian, pottery, welding and archeology relate to the history of the ocarina and she might use them in Mrs. Horner’s next assignment. ;-)
I was never able to play any musical instrument well, but even I can play a tune on a kazoo (prefer a metal one). Visiting the Kazoo Museum in Eden, NY is on my bucket list.
Luann is faced with the same dilemma as students have for as long as there was the ‘mandatory college education if you want to make it in this life’ and is handling it well, not much differently as many before her. I’m wondering if we’re reading about someone’s real life experiences. Maybe we should all just stop trying to tell the authors how to write it. Story lines tend take on a life of their own.
When I was a kid, we called the Ocarina a Sweet Potato. If memory serves me correctly it’s an ocarina that plays the first notes in The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly theme song
The only consolation in this frenzy of signing up for anything and everything is that at least Luann acknowledges that she will pick a major eventually. Looks to me like she needs some advising and mentoring, which most colleges provide. i think Luann needs to have a session with Ms Phelps-Fogarty. I wonder what Tara’s major is.
When I started collage in 1970 the first 60 semester ours were a core deemed essential for a well educated person. 6 hours US history, 6 hours English, a humanities class such as music appreciation, a physical science class, natural science class… Back then all California public colleges required 4 semester of PE-which could include archery/bowling. Many schools required swimming.

So Mrs Horner is Luann’s role model. I think she ought to interview her and perhaps learn a thing or two about life.

How many ocarina players does it take to screw in a lightbulb?
Don’t know, because they won’t stop playing their ocarina and posting the videos on Youtube.
