I know Brad and Toni are trying to do the right thing.. But I feel like they’re enabling Jonah to be a lousy parent. They’re also letting themselves get taken advantage of with no fair compensation.
If Jonah asked them to watch Shannon for 3 months.. would they agree to that, too?
I think the longest they should keep her is 1 week and then Jonah needs to find other accommodations.
.
On a side note, Has anyone here seen the new Beverly Hills Cop Axel F movie? I thought it was quite good. Really brought back the old memories…
Ah you naysayers who are saying they don’t know how to parent and shouldn’t have kids. They do! They know each other’s strengths and weaknesses. They know how they’ll raise their kids. I suspect they’re just not interested in trying to correct Shannon. She’s the product of Jonah’s parenting so anything they try to fix will be undone when she goes home. What’s the point? So they only love her and make her feel secure and safe. That’s all she needs when she is with aunt Toni and uncle Brad
If they do decide to continue to be Jonah’s doormat, that doesn’t necessarily doom us to an entire month of “look at meeee, I’m a spoiled Brat” G&K could move on to another arc.
When I start to have a glimmer of hope about people and the U.S. all I need to do is read comments in the comic section, especially Luann, and that hope is crushed. I’m reminded of what a spectacular failure the educational and social systems are.
People who think free room, food and utilities where a person can come and go as they please is a “gulag”
People who love to beat up on a, what 6 to 10 year old, ficitional girl (does that really make you feel big and important?) and who like to slam a person who IS actually making arrangements to ensure his child is being taken care of. A Dad who is pursuing his hopes and dreams. It’s sad that just because your lives are pathetic and dreary you have to try to drag down others who are still chasing their dreams, still have hope.
I can see it now, some commenters at a family Thanksgiving dinner.
Grandma: “Grandson could you bring me a glass of water while you’re in the kitchen?”
Commenter: “Sure thing, that will be $2”
Grandma: “Really? You’re already in the kitchen and I’d have to get my walker and struggle to walk to the kitchen and I might spill the water on my way back to the table”
Commenter: “Well, in that case, the water will be $5 (but you can skip the tip, it IS a holiday after all), but I’ll cut you a deal, I can hand you your walker for $1”
Time for some real parenting by these two. They should finalize an agreement with absent dad, and start to have serious conversations with Shannon about expected behaviors. They let her run wild and run the house, and that’s not how to parent.
“Like I said, Toni, we make a great team!” …. “Yes, Brad, we do. I’ll make a schedule for Shannon’s activities.”…. “Sounds fun!” ….”Yes, I’m sure you’ll BOTH have fun.”…. (later) “Uhh… Toni, my love?” …. “Yes, Brad my sweet?” …. “Which of these activities are YOU going to do with Shannon?” …. “Well, since she really can’t make spinach omelettes or Eggs Benedict, and isn’t capable of actually cleaning up afterwards, I thought that you would enjoy it most if I would just leave all the activities to you! And it’s summertime. The more she’s out of this house and away from me, err, I mean, the more activities she does outside this house is good for her. Besides, I have to work.” …. “Buuut, Toni, when am I supposed to find time to work?” …. “Weeell, Brad, maybe you can find a babysitter. I’m off to the station now, ta-taaah!”
They’re also both firefighters. Aren’t they on call, to some extent? I’m guessing mom and dad will do a bit of coverage, when their schedules overlap and there’s no-one to pick her up from wherever she happens to be.
There is a saying that “teamwork makes the dream work.” I understand that this is what parenting is about. However, Toni soon learns that scheduling and kids don’t always mix.
Looks as though Brad and Toni have decided to care for Shannon for the month. I expect TJ (and others) to help if they get called to work. Now that we’ve seen a helpful Shannon of the fantasies, maybe she won’t be so bad. Hoping…..
It seems decided, Shannon will live with them for the whole August! It will be interesting to see what all three will be like at the end of such a long time. Maybe Shannon will end up feeling very sad because she’ll miss her father, not Toni and Brad keeping her. I also hope there’s still a chance to see Toni’s aunt again.
For all the folks saying “let him find other accommodations”. The guy has already proven in the past that he’s irresponsible. I know lots of people who sadly “inherit” their grandchildren, nieces, nephews because the PARENTS are incompetent. I honestly think it’s going to end up someday with Jonah getting killed and Brad and Toni becoming THE PARENTS …
I will say that I enjoyed those two alternate realities. I wouldn’t mind if they came back and experimented with some of the other characters, if only for the fun of it.
I’m probably repeating but considering some of the recent vitriol in the comments I’ll take the hit: I think we’ve hit the point that it’s not about enabling Jonah its is taking care of a child that didn’t ask to be in this situation. Shannon doesn’t get to choose in this.
I am very impressed the way this comic has evolved. It once was another teen angst comic, but now it is looking at more mature issue. Bravo, Greg Evans, Bravo.
Brad and Toni are doing the right thing. Their relationship with Shannon is the only consistency in her life and who would Jonah get to watch her if they said no? One of his equally irresponsible actor friends? Just don’t let her talk them into getting a puppy LOL!
What’s missing is the part after Jonah says he has this opportunity…the part where the 3 of them sit at the table and discuss it. What does it encompass? What kind of a schedule? What will Jonah do to contribute to the expense? Then they tell Jonah they will consider it and talk it over a couple of days and will get back to him.
One of the baristas at my coffee shop quit this morning to take care of her grandkids full time since their mom is an addict.
Don’t know for sure, but it seems likely that quitting a job as the sole breadwinner just as two more people arrive in the household might be a questionable decision. Probably just me imagining things.

Well Brad, looks like YOU are going to do the “heavy lifting,” here.
I like Toni.
But this little maneuver makes Me think that “Passing the Buck” RUNS in the Daytona Family.
But the really SAD part is that it appears that “No, Jonah we can’t do it” is not even going to be an option this time around.
Not surprising.
Just Disappointing……..,

Shannon is better off with people she already knows. Do you think she should be put in a temporary foster home? That would be the alternative.
