Danae: I like raisins but not grapes. Weird, huh? Monterey jack cheese. Does that refer to the town in California of a guy named Jack? Or both? they say it might rain today. We'll see. My stomach just growled. cool! I say, no one actually likes peas, that peas are only tolerated! What did people do before there was Facebook and Twitter? Joe Pyle: We kept our brain-droppings to ourselves. And no, I'm not going to buy you an iPad to stop you from Tweeting out loud... Danae: Hey... it just occurred to me that you don't have to sing to make karaoke annoying!

I agree with Lord D. But I like canned peas, but not fresh or frozen. Go figure?
cleokaya over 14 years ago
JDG yegads!! Canned peas taste like the can, whereas fresh and frozen are sweet tasting. But, each to their own.
As far as Danae is concerned, boy am I glad that I do not have kids. LOL

More than you ever wanted to know:
“Although Monterey Jack is an American cheese, it was developed before California entered the Union, and it actually has a long and colorful history. Franciscan monks in monasteries around the Monterey region first started making the cheese in the 1700s, creating a cheese which is aged only briefly before being served. The cow’s milk cheese is semi-firm with a creamy, mild flavor and a high moisture content. Mexican and Spanish inspired cuisine in California often uses Monterey Jack, and the cheese also melts very well, making it quite suitable for grilled cheese sandwiches.
In the late 1800s, an entrepreneur named David Jack realized that a commercial market for the cheese might exist, and he started selling it in other parts of California. The cheese acquired the name “Monterey Jack’s” or “Jack’s Monterey,” which later evolved into Monterey Jack. Since the cheese is highly versatile, it quickly became a popular seller. Other dairies around California and elsewhere in the United States also began producing Monterey Jack, although some consumers prefer the cheese from Monterey county.
There are a number of variations on the classic Monterey Jack cheese. Some producers add herbs or hot peppers to make herbed Jack or pepper Jack cheeses. Monterey Jack is also sometimes blended with Colby, another mild American cheese, to make Colby Jack. One of the most coveted varieties of Monterey Jack is dry Jack, an aged version of the cheese which can be difficult to find outside of California. Dry Jack acquires a much more complex, sharp flavor and it turns hard enough to be grated and used like Parmesan.”
P.S. You can’t beat grated Dry Jack for homemade enchiladas - good stuff.

Ushindi –
Yes, that was more than I thought I wanted to know, but it was very informative. Thank you!

Yes, thanks, Ushindi– and I should also add to (oh, I dunno whom), “Don’t get pithy with me, thister!”

Canned peas are too mushy for me. Give me fresh or frozen peas any day. The best peas I have ever eaten were sugar snap peas, uncooked and in the pod… fresh off the vine. Yum!

I like snow peas, but beyond that, Bluck.
Celecca, I gave peas a chance all through my growing years. Then when I moved away from my parents, I dropped them like a hot potato - but I love potatoes of all kinds and broccoli, which I was never served growing up. Mom served peas because she liked them - but she didn’t like broccoli.

It’s amazing to me that a strip about one topic can uncover a whole other topic among it’s readers. Who knew there were so many pea detractors out there? LOL
Justice22 over 14 years ago
Ushindi, You deserve a big Thank’ee. I am a cheese lover and in fact I like creamed peas with melted cheese. I’d love to try the dry Jack. Fresh and properly frozen peas are best.

Ushindi, I don’t even like cheese and I enjoyed the information. It actually answers one of Danea’s questions…. BTW, there is nothing better than green pea soup with chunks of ham…..oh, and oyster crackers! Mmmm………..
jackmatt over 14 years ago
I agree, Varnes – Mmmmm… and mushy peas, English style – love peas any way I can get them. It’s the boiled okra my Okie-mom used to serve that made any other veggie a veritable taste sensation, by comparison. Yep– a choice between peas and okra? It’s peas every time!

ushindi is correct about monterey jack cheese being developed before david jacks was born. note i did say “jacks”, not jack. being from here on the peninsula, my face would be extremely red if caught saying otherwise.
also, the best way to eat peas, other than snap peas, is in a soup with large chunks of ham in it…YUMMMMM!

Ushindi, good info on Monterey Jack. Lived in Monterey County for five years and never heard this.

I know Alton Brown has done at least ONE show featuring peas (“Give Peas a Chance,” naturally) and contends that most of us simply overcook our peas. (And we, too often, use nearly flavorless canned peas.)
Having spend a portion of the “ore-wasted” term of my wasted youth, I recall the jack cheese in the greater Monterey area (Including Pacific Grove, and Marina-del Mar, just north of Fort Ord) being more flavorful than it has been since our family migrated north.
Shakespeare actually had to toss a coin to choose whether it was lawyers or “karaoke-ists” to go first. He even went for two out of three.
