Non Sequitur by Wiley Miller for December 24, 2011
Transcript:
Twas the night before Christmas and there won't be flight. Santa can't make his rounds, at least not by tonight. But Santa still smiled, it's not a time to be sad, because the best gift of all is one we already had. It's a smile and a hug that brings us true joy, and means a lot more than any gizmo or toy. So turn to a loved one, whether nearby or far, and tell them a loved one is just what they are.

I was expecting (as I sure many others were) some fanciful, surreal, creative twist here.
This was better.

What a story, amid all the speculation of how Santa would prevail and Wiley brought us to this!
Merry Christmas!!

well, i like a ipad2 over a smile and a hug.

And if you don’t have a loved one, there’s always booze and tears to help you get through the season.

Merry Christmas everyone!

And remember that a candy cane is not that at all, rather, it is an upsidedown “J” for Jesus.

And to those who don’t get the meaning of Christmas expecting only presents are probably thinking they must’ve been so bad that they didn’t even deserve coal.
wilb44 almost 13 years ago
First, I do wish all a Merry Christmas, But let me be the first to say the “Joy to the World” ending is not worthy the buildup. What happen to the out of the box, nontraditional, fly by the seat of your paints thinking the strip and the cartoonist are famous for. Granted, the bar has been set so high and I just expect to be laughing my head off or be thinking about the tongue in cheek statement made by the art form called Non Sequitur. With this I will say Happy Holidays and go to read “Family Circus” for the traditional warm eggnog type of cartoon.

I hate to be a Bah Humbug – but we didn’t get the Saturday Edition of Newsday today, they skipped right over it and we have Sunday’s paper and comics. So my daughter ( age 5) had me come online to see what happened to the reindeer. Now she’s in tears because the reindeer are going to be eaten by the killer whale or even worse – starve or freeze to death or maybe drown, and the “orphan children all over the world aren’t going to be getting any presents on Christmas and they won’t know that there are people who love them.”
She really thought the Killer Whale was going to tow Santa out to the iceberg, save the reindeer and get the presents to the orphan children all over the world, I myself had put my money on Cap’t Eddie and Flo. Whereas I can appreciate the meaning behind the ending I have to agree with my daughter – SAVE THE REINDEER AND GIVE THE ORPHAN CHILDREN THEIR PRESENTS!!!

For the past year I have only been home on weekends. What a wonderful thing it was to be able to get up out of my chair and go give my wife a big hug after being inspired to do so by Mr. Miller.
Thanks, and Merry Christmas to you and everyone here…
Sandfan almost 13 years ago
Thanks for the traditional “warm and fuzzy” ending, Wiley, and a lump of coal to all those who thought this arc was about global warming.
MERRY CHRISTMAS!

It has come to my attention, that over in Chatham Islands, New Zealand, it’s 13h45 ahead of the UTC and thus 22h45 ahead of ME in the Eastern Time Zone. That makes it Sunday December 25th… and thus…
jpsomebody almost 13 years ago
Merry Christmas!
Chelle962 almost 13 years ago
Awwwwww. The perfect ending.
Allan CB Premium Member almost 13 years ago
My apologies – Chatham Island, New Zealand is only 18h45min ahead, not 22h45. BUT It’s still Christmas there! (and most of Aus too!)
tripwire45 almost 13 years ago
So it’s a “Grinch stoled Christmas” ending after all, with humanity cast as the Whos in Whoville. Now if only people would rise to the occasion.
cleokaya almost 13 years ago
And a very nice Christmas was had by all.
Sosaidh almost 13 years ago
I really enjoyed the ending, but can’t help but wonder: What about the reindeer on the shrinking iceberg? What kind of Christmas will they have? Maybe there will be a post-Christmas miracle?

Well so much for all of the Eco-Political posturing and pontificating of the past few days. No wonder Wiley took so much effort to try to get us all to calm down. It was just a nice sentimental cartoon after all.

What happened to the killer whale and the reindeer??

At this most joyous time of the year, MERRY CHRISTMAS! Or whichever other religious holiday you celebrate near the winter solstice. Yes, religious! EVERY iteration of the Mid-Winter Festival has its roots in a religion. There is NO secular basis for this holiday.

True that, Wiley. Right on!
Blossoming almost 13 years ago
(I had initially thought that’s where the ending would go, but then when people mentioned Cap’n Eddy, I thought, “oh no!, They’re right…”. But, the lead- in was in the line: “But, without presents, would it be Christmas after all?”… I think that everyone’s spinning around and around buying gifts that the meaning of seeking union with something greater than oneself can’t be seen through the distraction and illusion/mist and smoke… Also, with the religious kinda blending together and secularism becoming a religion of it’s own,… Noone knows how they want to celebrate it)… I must say, my “holy” day is celebrated on October 27, the day my current satguru/divine son of God was born. Perhaps to be more authentic, I need to begin saying “Happy Bhandara!” every October 27th… I usually just put my reserves on hold and wait until the Christmas holiday to celebrate my occasion in quietude… I see Christmas is the time of year we make sure that everyone has everything they need, celebrate the gift of a Master being brought into the world and forgive each other and come together… it would be nice if we could do that all year… Thank you Wiley! HUGS!!!!! Merry Christmas to all!

Well, I have to admit that I also was wrong. But, I still have one question:
.
Will Danae get into the spirit too?
Blossoming almost 13 years ago
@bluskies From yesterday, I didn’t mean to force my views when I said “nonalcoholic” eggnog… It’s none of my business that you or others choose to drink… (It’s just that, I drink "soy"nog, which actually tastes good, no matter how you have it… It has pumpkin spice in it, yum! :))
tolosagirl1958 almost 13 years ago

As we celebrate the season, don’t leave Scrooge at the Grave, embrace him as he is at the end of the story, a changed man, loving mankind and keeping the spirit of Christmas in his heart all year round. Mighty Christ’s Mass to one and all.
