Waiter: The ruling on gay marriage was good news, eh, Bob? Bob: Yep! It could be a boon for us divorce lawyers. Waiter: No, I mean...um...aren't you...? Bob: Gay? No...why'd you think that? Waiter: Well, you came out with a new lifestyle, so... Bob: What lifestyle? Waiter: You know...the healthy, less-manly one. Bob: Going vegan doesn't make you gay, Tony. Ned: He can't help it, non...he's an American. Waiter: Are you sure?

I have recently committed to veggie, and so far so good.. I’m prepared! I think…. Eggs, on the other hand, especially the cage free organics, are really hurting the budget

I’ve never heard a gay person complain that there weren’t enough choices in the gay section of the menu.

‘Meat eaters aren’t going to like the near future with between the water shortages and droughts, meat will be in short supply and much, much more expensive.’-That’s when the scenario from Heinlein’s ’Farnham’s Freehold’ novel could come in to play… substitute one vegan type for the other.

Ummmm what do you think vegetables and fruits are grown with? Water shortages and droughts won’t be too good for vegans either.
strictures over 9 years ago
Nope, there won’t be a shortage.Withing 20 years, lab grown meat will be a real & tasty choice, with the added improvement of very little fat in it.It already exists in miniscule quantities, but doesn’t taste that good according to those that have tried it.

I see all the ads on late-night TV for Krill Oil supplements. Recommended for vegans as a dietary supplement. Is that allowed in a vegan diet?

I fully support the choice of anyone to Vegan or Vegetarian, so long as they don’t get their undies in a bunch when they see me eating a burger.
Regarding the cost of meat – it should be expensive. I get around the cost by growing and hunting my own. If you buy a certain brand of eggs, they may have come from my farm.

Misunderstanding and ignorance are usually different; in most cases.

I think some of you are proving Wiley’s point. It seems to me that Americans, generally, are woefully ignorant and intolerant of anything other than the lifestyle they personally subscribe to. That certainly includes diet, sexual preference, religion and politics. The United States is developing a “Them against Us” attitude. If you don’t agree 100% with “ME” then you’re one of “THEM”.
Regarding omnivores, carnivores, and vegetarians… personally, I am omnivorous but rarely eat beef, anymore.I do believe in the maxim: “All Things in Moderation”

Not if you switch to eating PETAs and violently fundamentalist VEGANs. (Just don’t tell anyone where you got your meat from.)

For those who didn’t get the Farnham’s Freehold reference:“Hugh is particularly motivated to act quickly once he discovers that the ruling class is fond of eating white people and he fears that one of his sons or Barbara will be a victim of cannibalism.”https://www.sfsite.com/08a/ff349.htm

“I was speaking of eating less meat, way less than what is produced and consumed today. Soon it will be too expensive and take too much resources to maintain it.”
Absolutely spot on ! There are many scientific and economic studies that bolster your argument .

“The smell of frying bacon has ruined many an aspiring vegan.”I heard that! None of the reasons I have for eschewing meat have anything to do with not liking it. The odors frying bacon, barbecuing steak, et al, all can make the gastric juices flow.

I did not scratch and claw my way to the top of the food chain to eat plants. If the rest of you want to eat plants, go ahead with my blessings. It means all the more meat for me.

“….Most people won’t eat much of what is edible out there. "
Good point. I live in Ecuador in an area which is rich in natural resources and is a veritable garden for much of the country, as well as a vibrant coastal area with abundant fishing and self-sustaining fish, shrimp, and crab farming. You’d be amazed at the variety of vegetables and fruits that are cheap and abundant.I live in the city but half my neighborhood have chickens running around their yards and a small vegetable batch or fruit trees. These are not wealthy people but they are rich in many, many other ways.

Unless our Constitution is overthrown, ‘Congress shall make no law establishing’ means exactly that: we do not have a state religion. That is unlike many (most, in fact) countries in the world, where there is an established state religion and laws are based on that religion. Yes, there are plenty of people who are trying to insist that the US is a particular type of religious nation, but it is not. And the Supreme Court ruling on marriage should have proven that.
That said, Leviticus 20:13 has not been treated as law by most Christians and Jews for a very long time. I don’t recall ever hearing a rabbi calling for that section of Leviticus to be enforced. I’m age 65.

From the Water Footprint Website, translated into US terms by Huffington Post:
It takes 518 gallons of water to produce a pound of chicken.
It takes 707 gallons of water to produce a pound of lentils.
For almonds (often suggested as a substitute for both high carb-based wheat flour for diabetics, and as a substitute for meat based protein), it takes 1929 gallons of water to produce a pound.
Chickpeas take 501 gallons of water to produce a pound.
Pork takes 395 gallons of water to produce a pound.
On the other hand, if you like broccoli, cauliflower and brussel sprouts, you can produce a pound of each of them for only 34 gallons of water. My fav veg, asparagus, is the water hog at 258 gallons per pound….

I’m all spiral-eyed from reading through the 1,000,000 comments above (poor me!), but wanted to be sure I wasn’t repeating someone. I haven’t seen a clear, in-your-face explanation of the difference between “vegan” (pronounced VEE-gun for some reason) and “vegetarian.” According to peta2.com, “Vegetarians do not eat any animals. This includes pigs, chickens, cows, sea animals, and every other animal. In addition to not consuming any animal flesh, a vegan (strict vegetarian) also doesn’t eat dairy products, eggs, or any other product derived from an animal. Vegans also avoid using products that have been tested on animals or made from animal skins.”

I don’t think that we in Canada view Americans as badly as many of the Americans posting here do. I can’t recall which noted American said this about France after WWII but it more or less sums it up: " France is always there whenever they need us". Also, in every disaster the US is there and in the biggest way.Tony doesn’t seem to be intolerant at all. Nor is he ignorant He is misinformed but it doesn’t seem to affect the way he treats people whom he believed were “different”. A good soul.(Maybe tomorrow’s strip will prove me wrong).BTW Divorce lawyers make ambulance chasers look like saints.

If the water shortages and droughts are as severe as you say they will be, there won’t be much of anything to eat.
But go ahead – blame it all on meat eating rather than tackle the multitude of issues behind the crisis – including the introduction of GMO crops.

Half of the fruits, nuts and veg consumed in the US are grown in California. The drought there is partly caused by climate change, partly caused by decades of misguided surface and groundwater management policies. It will affect everyone in the US, including vegans and vegetarians. The drought in California is not due to raising beef cattle.
