Your life is truly in a good place if you can wake up at 3:00 AM and only think about what you want for breakfast. That is if you have food for breakfast.
On the other hand, for me, some of those ‘waking’ moments have produced an alternate solution to complex projects – as if a page had turned to give me a new perspective. Didn’t help with the need for naps next day but that’s about as usual.
Just finished reading “The Golden Tresses of the Dead,” the latest Flavia de Luce novel. In it, Flavia’s cohort, Dogger, tells her that angels are really our positive, good thoughts. Nice idea! Even better if you can remember those you have at 3:30. . .
For those who may have missed it, Darrin Bell won this year’s Pulitzer Prize for editorial cartooning. And this morning in the comment section of the Candorville strip on GoComics, the most notable congratulation came from Mr. Wiley Miller (a guy who knows a thing or 2 about what an honor it is).
My Morning Muse – who was never particularly amusing – usually struck at about 4 am. This was the time of worry and regret. The time to fret over debt and rue the brew.
Now, I am awakened at the same hour but for strictly biological reasons, and after relieving those, I am able to fall blissfully back into sleep. With age, there does come a certain amount of tranquility.
My Creative Muse visits anytime she feels like it and at any hour, so I always have a pen and paper handy to jot down a thought or idea. If I happen to be on the computer, I have a seperate ideas file that I can enter these musings into.
Dreams are a great source of creative material. A friend of mine dreamed every detail of her novels, and they did very, very well. The subconscious is a very real part of the creative process.
Many of my novels started with a dream premise. In one dream, a woman is on an exploding boat, flames behind her as she jumps off. I woke to wonder what happens next, and I built the rest of the novel from that point. (My icon is from the cover of that book. The flames are from yet another explosion.)

If she’s so proficient at writing them down, why doesn’t she leave them on the nightstand for next morning?

There’s a pen and a notepad next to my alarm clock. I think I used it once for a wee hours inspiration, which wasn’t too inspiring the next day.

If only my boss would let me sleep on the job, I’d be more productive. Yes, 3 AM seems to be my most creative time.

“Three AM is the midnight of the soul.” “More people die in the hospital at three than at any other time.” Or something to that effect.

When it’s the middle of the night and you just can’t sleep there is a simple cure.
Just “wank off” or “paddle the canoe” until relief comes, then roll over and go to sleep.
Works every time!
