“That’s XXX for you.” For you. Not me. That is fatalistic thinking and making an excuse to be lazy. Take a chance and reach out to birds of another feather.
Is Wiley predicting Trump is about to reveal secret pardons? That would certain stab the GQP senators in the back. After ‘acquittal’ Trump will suddenly pardon himself and show the blanket pardon for the rioters and cop killers of January 6th?
Just asking questions! First Amendment! Some people are saying!
Yeah, I love how those on the “left” are NOW saying unity, we must unify. I’ll say “OK”. But in four years when someone on the “right” is elected President, will they still say we need to continue unity.
I had to look up anthropomorphic, new word for me. I am glad to see Wiley getting back to his true talent of non sequiturs. I missed the title block on the first look and am glad I went back for a second look to find the reason for he forth panel.
As is often the case, non sequitur is still my favorite comic of the day.
“While your friend holds you affectionately by both your hands, you are safe, for you can watch both his.” Ambrose Bierce, late 19th-early 20th century.
So. Trump is ‘acquitted’. Here is the list of the Republicans who were, in the end run, brave and dedicated enough to stand up and honor their oath to protect the Constitution:
Susan Collins, MaineMitt Romney, UtahLisa Murkowski, AlaskaBen Sasse, NebraskaPatrick Toomey, PennsylvaniaBill Cassidy, LouisianaRichard Burr, North Carolina
All of the other 43 stand forever nakedly enshrined in a hall of shame, after trying to cover themselves with tissue-thin and transparent fig leaves: the trial was unconstitutional (a concept dismissed by a bipartisan vote before the presentation of the House Managers’ case), divisive, a “waste of time and resources”, and most egregious as an outright lie, “Not what President Biden promised”.
So. What do we do about these 43 shameful examples of personal lack of spine/honor?
Vote them out of office. They have sent a clear signal that, as far as they are concerned, politics in this country has no limits for acceptable behavior. They have signaled very emphatically that there are no consequences either for the activity itself or for ignoring/supporting it. We must let our parties and elected official know emphatically that Trump’s behavior while in office, and particularly his unleashing of a coup attempt, is NOT ‘OK’, and that it will not be accepted or allowed to pass, ever again.
Please, all of you who are equally disgusted, join together to pillory these scapegraces at the primary and general polls. Permanently end their ‘political careers’ as rapidly as the elections allow us to do so. Those who live in states that allow recall, please work to start that process.
To me, the worst part of this whole sordid affair is that many of our Republican senators sought to hide behind the gossamer concept that holding this trial in the Senate was “unconstitutional”. this concept does not wash, on three counts:
1) Trump acted while he still was in office. His actions while in office ARE accountable and within the framework of the Constitution, whether he currently is in office or whether he is out of office when the actions to discipline him begin. Otherwise, the Constitutional statute regarding impeachment is meaningless, because a sitting President could do something even more egregious (like inappropriately involve us in WWIII) during the morning of the last day of his term, and then thumb his nose at Congress for attempting to hold him to consequences.
2) He acted while in office, even as he had been acting prior to and after taking office – that is to say, without any regard for consequences – apparently believing that there were none for him.
3) There already was a clear precedent for impeaching an elected official after (s)he leaves office.
Items 1 through 3 really are beside the point, though. The House began the impeachment process before Trump left office. Impeachment is a process, one which includes a House indictment (article(s) of impeachment) and then a Senate trial. That process must run to completion. To attempt to separate them by holding that the House indictment is meaningless because the Senate trial did not begin before the office-holder left office is simply ludicrous, and it violates every bit of law. Attempting to use this as an excuse for avoiding or voting against confirmation is an exposure of a complete lack of principle and/or respect for law.
And in an earlier vote in the process, the Senate itself confirmed that the trial was Constitutional! How does that square against voting against conviction because “We have no Constitutional authority to convict him”?
