I work as one of Santa’s elves at the mall at Christmas and am being whatever the Easter Bunny’s counterpart is (see my avatar) right now. We are set up directly beneath Starbucks. They know me and my order on sight.
Peppermint Mocha? If he drank something with more caffeine, his coworkers wouldn’t be complaining and he would make it to his son’s school much faster.
The only time I go to Starbucks is when I travel some where and add another one of their “been there” ceramic cups. Presently have 36 of them, maybe more.
There’s a podcast that I used to listen to where one of the hosts would talk about how many times a day he went there. If you did the math, he was spending at least seven thousand dollars a year on it. After that, he’d usually go into how the listeners, mostly broke kids, weren’t donating enough money to the show.
I get migraines just from the smell of coffee, and most strongly from Starbucks. I cannot understand why anyone would want to put something that smells that horrendous into their mouths. It’s amazing, but I survive without coffee or tea and avoid caffeine. Migraines are nasty, but I have never had a cup of coffee. I tried one sip once, gagged.
I live in a country where coffee is one of our major exports and best-kept secrets. Most of the coffee grown for export here is Robusta bean which is used in all your freeze-dried and instant coffees and your “supermarket” blends. The Arabica coffees grown here are exquisite and the exports are used in high-end and gourmet brands of ground coffee or roasted beans. Excellent 100% Arabica coffees like Zaruma, Loja, or Ibarra area grown are inexpensive (here) but sometimes difficult to find.
The problem is that the average Ecuadoran is used to drinking instant coffee and rarely takes the trouble to brew a decent cup of coffee at home or in most of the small restaurants. While we have our equivalents to Starbucks in the major cities and tourist hot spots, the average citizen is neither the discerning coffee drinker nor the caffeine addict found in the States.
I made that observation at a meeting a while ago (pre-pandemic): as we sat down at the conference room table I noticed that everybody had a cup of coffee in front of them (it was mid-afternoon). “We’ve really normalized this addiction, imagine if everyone pulled out a mirror and snorted a line for a pick-me-up before the meeting started”
While I will admit to a past coffee addiction Starbuck always tasted bitter and burnt, much like their employees. Starbuck is my last choice for driving coffee, now Dutch Brothers is great. I drink Tea now the joys of being retired and 60.
Really thought it would be something more current than Starbucks—only I can’t think of any current addictive things that would spill out of your car. You only have so many screen-type devices in there.
I am happy to say that the one and only time I got coffee at a Star(lots o’)bucks was when I was at a wintertime convention in a big hotel with no other source of coffee on that day!
