They should still do that. Gen XYZers have poor grammar skills. We tried to play Mad Libs with my son and his wife. It turns out that despite a college degree, she was totally unable to produce or distinguish an adverb, adjective, etc., even after repeated explanations and examples. She had no concept of what modified what or what took an object. Diagramming sentences was very useful for that.
I HATED sentence diagraming in school, and usually zoned out in that class. That said, I was an avid reader (still am) and picked up proper grammar and punctuation usage that way. I still may not know which words are called what (aside from the basics; nouns, verbs, adjectives), but I know how to use them reasonably adequately.
Also an old fart here. I understand not teaching cursive, heck, I rarely write anymore, mostly use a computer keyboard (though was thankful for taking typing classes in junior high). And thankfully I never had to learn diagramming sentences (or Latin, though singing in a choir, I’ve learned how to pronounce it though, but could never understand or write it). But basic punctuation? Come on, throw me a period or comma kids. Memes take long enough to figure out with today’s slang I have to look up, let alone have to figure out where the one sentence / thought ends and another starts. Get off my lawn!

I liked diagramming sentences. Like figuring out a little puzzle. But then, I like word puzzles.

Verbs? We don’t need no stinkin’ verbs. AI will take care of this for us.
