Many, many years ago, I was assigned to patrol division and had been dispatched to the Sears store where a 13-14 year old male had been detained for shoplifting. I did the investigation and arrested the young man for shoplifting. I called the Juvenile Probation office and was instructed to cite him and a parent into Juvenile Court. I called his mother who came to the store extremely mad at everyone but the one she should have been angry with.

As she and her son left the store, I trailed them and heard her tell the boy, “Don’t worry, we’ll find somebody else to blame.” I wrote that statement down in the report as well. Later when he committed a much more serious felony level crime, I wasn’t surprised. Sad really.
