So it looks like the black cat in the 2015 Halloween special photo spread wasn’t one of Freddie’s cats, and this makes it more likely that the big floofball in the same picture isn’t one of Freddie’s, either. Even with a cat shelter in her back yard, it’s kind of surprising that Freddie doesn’t seem to have had any “personal” cats after Angus (though we know she had favorites at the shelter…).
In local news, Callie, Leila and Sam have been transferred from their foster home to the local SPCA, where they should be up for adoption this weekend. Sheri and the other fosters were delighted by their friendly personalities and expect them all to find forever homes soon.
Meanwhile, Sam is still here and slowly getting socialized, so Josette and I have a black cat of our own to watch over.
This is one of the most adorable things I’ve seen in a while, but… a cat shelter with no black cats? That’ll be the day! Sadly, they’re less likely to be adopted – which makes no sense, of course. I was raised in a black cat family. It’s hard to beat a bombay!
“Hello, ‘meetzncheezes’, this is Jimmy… I’m sorry, what time is WHAT? Pony rides? No ma’am, we don’t have pony rides for the kids. Why do I have a Pony? I don’t HAVE a pony, ma’am. No, I don’t know why your little girl said she saw a miniature pony in our back lot. No, no… I don’t think your daughter is lying… maybe it was a different lot. No, ma’am, I can’t imagine… Oh, wait. Wait, now I know. I’m sorry, it was just my new cat… well, there’s no need to be rude, ma’am…”==============“I must admit there is another reason I wanted to come here for dinner. There’s supposed to be a special report on one of the other news stations tonight.” “What about?” Tre-C asked. “Does it interest you… professionally? Personally?” Megan thought for a moment, then said, “little of both, Kitten. And to be honest, it’s a situation that will not be easy or quick to be resolved. The special should be on in ten minutes.” “Perfect timing, then… here comes Max with the tuna.” Megan picked up a piece of the Albacore and thanked Maxie, then asked him, “did it go ok at the deli today? Just curious…” “Oh, yeah Meg, Jimmy and I are getting along fine since you brought me over. Funny thing, though- As I was walking into the yard from the back gate I saw a woman and her kid in a car, and the little girl was pointing at me and yelling at the woman like she’d never seen a cat before…”
The perfect picture of a happy home evening- mom and dad reading the paper with the kitties asleep on the couch with them. Elvis is even in The corner with his reading glasses on. And, of course, a ghost petting Pucky…
Dang nabbit Georgia… It is way too early in the day for me to be having a case of the "Awwwwwwwwww"s and wanting to reach through the screen to give good boys some well-deserved chin skritches and hug a ghost.
I despaired of ever finding the black cat of my dreams, because my cats kept picking me out and so far I’ve had a brown tabby, a blue calico, another brown tabby, an orange tabby, and a dilute calico. After we lost our beloved little guy (Our orange tabby was the sweetest kitty ever), we were matched up with our little soot sprite. Some people have wondered if she was our little guy reincarnated, because she’s so affectionate. I don’t believe it, but I definitely think our little guy had a paw in our little soot sprite finding us. Freddie can come over and cuddle her any time.
I’ve had cats of many colors over the years and six have been black. The first two adopted me, one was born in my house (from one of the first two), two were found abandoned at the local lake as tiny kittens and I volunteered to take them (these two are still with me) and another that I adopted when she was 18 years old after her original human passed away. They have all been wonderful loving cats with great personalities and it really irks me that people are so prejudiced against black cats!
Good morning and happy Caturday, orbsters and orbabies! I have had several feral black cats pass through my head. The one indoor black cat that I can recall was Meathead, the Brainless Wonder.
This is such a peaceful, lovely strip today. Elvis’ reading glasses always get me, and then we have Freddie, watching over Puck and patting him gently. So sweet! and, of course, we can’t leave out Lupin, sleeping on his back!
Georgia has announced on BCN that there may be a fourth reporter!!! They are fostering a stray ginger cat named Goldie. I tried to copy her post from the website but it wouldn’t post here. So go to the website for the whole story.
I just realized that I dreamed about BCN last night. I was in an airport or something petting puppies and kitties and some other carnivore that’s now extinct (I don’t know what it was, just that I knew that I wasn’t supposed to be able to pet it because it was supposed to be dead) and an elderly man with dark skin said that it was a good thing that the house never flooded or I’d never be able to travel and that he had to get back to Florence. At first I thought he meant Florence Italy but after he left someone standing nearby told me that he meant his cat. And I realized that he must’ve been Angus’s person from the Halloween special.
I’ve had black cats (and dogs) off and on my whole life. Currently, we share the house with Conan, my big black German Shepherd Dog (hence my monicker – GSD Mom) and a house panther named Akiro. Of the two, Akiro is the fiercest by a wide margin; I wonder if Freddie could tame him down a bit with a series of ghostly visits? I’ve never had a cat that growls at the UPS truck before.
Everything is tracking at 98% close to perfect. The new family spent the better part of the day in isolation in the downstairs bathroom. Actually, everyone did while my friend and I installed a new front door on the castle. Stampede Partners et al spent the day in the upstairs bathroom. A word to the wise. If you buy a custom home built by the homeowner be prepared for….anomalies. The simple 2 hour job of replacing a pre-hung became a project that still needs another 2 hours of work today.
After we finished, vacuumed and such, gave an hour for quiet, Lisa and I went in to visit. 15 minutes sitting and speaking softly. A touch or 2. Wait an hour and repeat. A few more touches, a rump stroke on the half hidden kitten. Repeat several times.
I won’t call it an instant breakthrough but the progress last night was amazing. Trixie (mom) allowed us to give her some small strokes on the back. By 11ish she was allowing us to brush her. Still pretty much tense and there’s no way we’re going to attempt to pick her up, but she sits quietly and gets brushed. Even a little bit of drowsy eyes. As we were working with the kittens she had no problems at all, even closed her eyes.
Bandit has some sort of congestion infection thing going. This prompted us to do a towel capture and cocoon so we could clean up his snotty little face. Cocooned, he settled almost instantly and then accepted a mild scrubbing with a warm wash rag. That action is apparently very acceptable and makes you a sort-of-mom. Once his face was clean and some head rubbies were applied we unwrapped him.
He made no attempt to flee and sat for rubbies and stroking. I took advantage of this to do a mostly full body probing. Removed burrs and hair snarls, brushed a bit. He sat through it all without much visible tension. Got a few blinkies, no hissing, attempts at biting, all very good.

Tortie kitten was pretty much equally tolerant and was unwrapped more quickly. Did the fingertip probe and found the same burrs and knots, plus a tick. All removed, brushing commenced, tolerated very well. Kitty sits quietly for a minute or two after it all stops before making a move to return to the floor.
Ginger kitty…..mmmmmm…..not quite as easy. This little monster is a hisser and biter. Got both Lisa and I at one point or another. Which deterred us not at all. You vill haf your face vashed. You vil haf your fur checked fur shtuff. You vil be brushed. And it worked out OK. A little extra cocoon time made the difference.
Forward to this AM. Evidence of playing. Toys are in new locations. Progress. Bandit and tortie can be picked up barehanded. Very little struggling and a quick submission to the washcloth, brushing and rubbies. Ginger still need a towel capture but settled down much more quickly today. Trixie didn’t come out from behind the toilet but accepted rubbies around the side. We are still being very careful with her. A kitten nip is no big deal, but we do not want to provoke a full grown cat in a fury. It will be a leather glove even the first time we try to corral her for a more thorough exam.

Progress Report:

We repeated the process with the tortie. Face not so schmutzy but still a bit going on there. Monday this kitty and Bandit are going to the vet to be checked for infection. We were planning to wait a week or more so we could take the whole family together but Bandit has a raspy sneezy thing going on with more drainage than we are comfortable with.
No purrs yet, but confidence is high.

ICYMI…
Speaking of black cats, something TOTALY AWSUM happened this week…
My sis has really been missing her boss Zoe (my avi), who went OTRB in August at the dignified age of 17. Sis has even been to the local shelter a few times to look at some senior cats, but the 2 she had in mind got adopted. She was thinking about taking a bonded pair, but then on Wednesday her next-door neighbor said she was trying to find a home for her cousin’s MIL’s 10yo cat after MIL passed away recently. Sis said she’d be happy to take in the “orphaned” kitty.
Onyx arrived at sis’s place on Thursday. She looks enough like Zoe to be her sister, except that her fur is shorter. So far she’s been hiding most of the time, but she’s eating & using the catbox & even let sis pick her up & cuddle her briefly yesterday morning. “She didn’t purr, but at least she didn’t hiss either.”
So…a black kitty finds a new home on Halloween(!) & sis gets a new fur kid! (& of course I get my kitty fix when I go on vacation next month, hee hee!) & of course now we know why sis was hesitating – she was waiting for the Right One to come along!
