Luann by Greg Evans and Karen Evans for November 25, 2012
Transcript:
Luann: "When I kiss a guy, I always tilt my head to the right. And I prefer several small kisses to one long one. Is this typical? How do you kiss and breathe at the same time? Is it normal to get dizzy?" Luann: "What's the best way to get rid of garlic breath? If I've recently had a cold. Should I gargle before kissing? Are braces unsanitary? What about tongues? Are cold sores contagious?" Luann: "THIS is the stuff we should be learning in science!" Bernice: "What are you saying? Dissecting a frog isn't a useful life skill?"

what, you don’t think she should practice on the frog? there’s princes in those things
Angelalex242 about 12 years ago
Well, Levi, it seems Evans has taken pity on you, and granted thy fervent prayer.
Perhaps you should stop pestering the poor guy now.

That’s it? You finally see your girl and still you complain? Go soak your head.

In high school, they give you pickled frogs to dissect. In college bio, they give you live frogs and make you pith them. Guess how many frogs I’ve pithed in the last 40 years. Pith on it.

Those questions should be addressed in Health class.

There is a certain irony in dissecting this strip and sorting out its components. For reasons way too complicated to explain here, I didn’t take biology in high school: so I dissected a frog as a freshman in college. As I recall, we enjoyed our water pistol fights with the professor (who wrote the then-widely used textbook).

I dissected a rat in high school. Suffice it to say, I don’t know why any female rat would ever bother to be impregnated.

Whatever happened to “Zane”, remember Bernice’slove interest? He left to go to school but whereis he now? They had such a good story line..believethat was 2003.

Ah. THERE’S Your PROBLEM. Lu.
You are concerned about Your Actions WHEN You kiss a Guy when You SHOULD be concerned about Your Reactions AFTER You Kiss a Guy.
Like the times You Kissed Gunther and went TOTALLY Googly Eyed each Time; something You NEVER did with Mr. Ozball…..,

For Bernice, dissecting a frog would be a useful life skill. She wants to be a veterinarian. She needs to be ready in case Kermit ever comes in as a patient^^LOL

I’ve never dissected anything, but, I have swatted plenty of mosquitos, in my day. Maybe what Bernice needs is a life change; new look (The fuzzy hair thing is so 1970-80s women’s lib, college girl) and a new romance, or, perhaps Derek could make a comeback and twist her heart around, again!

Why I never became a brain surgeon:In HS biology we had to identify a frog’s brain during the dissection, and, for the life of me, I couldn’t find it. When I asked the teacher, he said I couldn’t find it because I had cut right through it.

kissing, the world will be better if more people kissed.

Yeah, I can see the interview at the school board. “Mr. Wilson, we’d like you to teach our adolescent girls and boys how to kiss. Do you have experiance in kissing?” Time to run away from THAT job fast!

kiss the frogs and hold your breath

Why, of course dissecting a frog is a useful life skill! And so is geometry. Think about it: where would you be if you did not know the formula for the area of a trapezoid? And if you’re not rich and famous, it’s because you didn’t learn your calculus! Don’t you wish now that you had mastered your calculus? And the diatomic molecules? And the names of each of the six wives of Henry the Eighth? Sorry, sorry, sorry now aren’t you?

Garry Trudeau isa gzypryglillionaire. So are the others, with all that merchandising and stuff. No need to feel guilty.

I took biology and let my lab partner dissect the frog. Couldn’t tell you one thing about frog innards. But, I have since eaten frog legs. (Tastes like chicken!)

I see the anti-intellectuals are out in force; doesn’t take much to find them, as they adhere to the dominant strain in American “culture” (see Richard Hofstadter’s “Anti-Intellectualism in American Life” or Susan Jacoby’s “The Age of American Unreason” for details). It’s not even surprising to see some who are aggressively anti-intellectual: sjsczurek especially, but also Brdshtt and artybee. These are the people who judge others based on how much money they have, who would turn universities into trade schools, and who listen to creationists and autocratic political leaders, because they are unable to analyze arguments. “On ne te demande pas à penser dans l’armée” (Anouilh).

My son skinned a rat in college and they put the carcass up on the prof’s bookcase, in a seated position with its legs crossed. Took him a while to notice.

We were in pairs and dissected piglets. I remember some of the class had to look at the other pair’s piglet because some of the little bodies had a sand like substance inside which made it hard to look at the organs. One girl said she would throw up if she saw any blood. I told her I did not see any blood.

After today’s discussion. I am SO glad that I was never forced to take biology; something totally useless unless you want to be a surgeon or something of that ilk
Xsia about 12 years ago
I totally agree! Disgusting!!! :-(

Noble of you to not put the other cartoonists out of work. (Insert some sort of silly political comentary here.)

I had to help some middle school kids dissect 18" long squids last year…… wasn’t pretty. :P
Mikeyj about 12 years ago
Ummm, I wasn’t choosing to be ignorant, I simply had no interest in biology, and, in Canadian schools it wasn’t a required course, at the time (It might be now, for all I know)
drewpamon about 12 years ago
The important part is not to dissect a frog. It is learning the scientific method. This method can be learned in a number of different sciences although biology is a very hands on (real to students) way of learning.

I never had a biology class (just chemistry) and I switched from typing to drafting (where I excelled). My sons excelled in math and science while I was not good in either. I never took any “home ec” either, but I had been making family meals every night years before HS (mom was not a cook).
vldazzle about 12 years ago
I remember the secretary at one of my engineering jobs who had studied archeaology and was upset that someone like me (not having finished college) could be making more than she. I was self taught in engineering and (as a drafter) also self taught in AutoCAD and in programming the menus and “lisps”. I raised my 4 kids from HS when I divorced their father and still did all of that with NO public assistance (I would have felt ashamed).

SusieSchroeder: Take biology over. Cold sores are Herpes simplex I, the STD form is H. simplex II. H. zoster is chicken pox and shingles. I frequently have H. simplex I (bad for a trombonist), almost died from chicken pox at age 6, and have lost some vision in my left eye from shingles (on my face). I am smart enough to have avoided H. simplex II.

OK…. maybe time for Luann to have just two cups of coffee in the morning instead of three, plus the Mountain Dew.
sjsczurek about 12 years ago
No, he’s not! Why this persistent rumor that Gunther is a homosexual? Because people want it to be so? Because it’s “in?” It’s as ridiculous as it is untrue.
